four to the floor

Especially common in techno, an unaccented 4/4 time pattern in which each beat is marked with a heavy kick drum. This is desperately boring at normal volume but at club levels takes over your entire body. Usually sourced from a Roland 909.

"Driving round town in his Corsa, playing four to the floor German house."

floor chimes

the collection of empty cans and bottles under the driver's seat or passenger side of a car which roll together, producing a soothing jingle-jangle sound when it goes round a corner or up a curb

When we go 'round corners in Senora's car the floor chimes play for us.

four on the floor

refers to two things, in my experience.

1. a rhythm pattern where the percussive bass takes place on every downbeat. Common in house, trance, other forms of techno, disco, etc.

it is the opposite of a breakbeat, where the percussive bass can be anywhere, but is normally not on beats 2 and 4, and rarely on 3.

2. refers to a 4 speed transmittion with the shifter on the floor (as opposed to the dash or the column)

1. I dig that four-on-the-floor beat; it goes well with the bassline.

2. John wrecked the four-on-the-floor transmittion in his car by going 80 MPH and then quickly shifting into reverse.

The Floor is Lava

1. A multiplayer game in which one person yells, "The floor is lava!" and all other players must comply and find higher ground to get to. Anywhere but the floor is safe and if players stay on the floor, then they are painfully burned to death. The floor becomes safe only when the player that called "lava" recalls that the floor has solidified and is safe to walk upon.

2. An utterance that causes absolute havoc when shouted. The equivalent of yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater, but perfectly legal and much more fun.

"When my friend yelled the floor is lava, I jumped on top of him to save myself and he burned to death."
