A word that originated in the 1980's in the Central Valley of Northern California (Stockton, Tracy, Manteca, Lathrop) area. Was NOT originally a Bay Area word. In fact when I went to college at Berkeley in the 1990's, we knew who was from the Central Valley by use of the word "hella." Recently, however, the word Hella has migrated to the rest of the Bay Area.
Dude, that is hella cool, or Man, that is hella good!
A substitution for very or a lot. Invented in Berkeley Ca and used mainly in the bay area
That's hella stupid.

Another way to say "very" or "really"
It's area of origin is often argued, commonly cited as being from the bay area.
It was made more popular recently after being used in the Life Is Strange game series
"That is hella cute"
"Can you leave my infection alone please?"

Whoever: Hella? You must be from NorCal.
JC: NorCal? I don't play that shit, we're ALL in California.
Whoever: Oh, I'm from SoCal...
JC: Alright, well, SoCal or NorCal, either way you sound retarded, see I'm from CALIFORNIA. You subtle gangsters, get outta here.

Slang meaning "really" "very" or "many" that Northern Californians think is really cool. When in reality the rest of Americans think its really very stupid.
Sally: Ugh, i just came back from my trip across Northern California
Sue: Was it cool?
Sally: Yeah, except those morons kept saying hella after every 3 words.
Sue: Hella? What the hell kind of word is that?
Sally: A lame one.
