gawk block

A gawk block is a plastic rectangular tool with a rectangular opening in it on one side. It is usually used in Marching Bands by striking over the side with the opening with a drum stick to produce a loud and piercing clicking noise, called a gawk, to keep time for the band by the drill instructor or drum major.

It is very irritating when the person keeping a beat on the gawk block passes very close to you, because it hurts your ears.

Back-blocks

Kiwi English vernacular for rural regions of bush and scrub land with farms and farmland being broken in. Usually difficult of access because only serviced by loose metal roads (gravel roads) that are narrow and dusty. Rough country farms with few and large paddocks inhabited by few people.

Not to be confused with back-block, which is the last paddock on the farm to have been broken into farmland.

The farm is in the back-blocks beyond Welsford (town in New Zealand).
Years ago Kaukapakapa was considered the back-blocks.

blocking lady

A self absorbed middle to upper class woman, usually a mother, who gets in people's way by stopping in inopportune or inappropriate places.

Usually older, glasses, mom jeans, maybe a sweatshirt with floral applique. They stand in the middle of aisles at the grocery store, look askance in the doorway of the Barnes and Noble, stop at green lights. not all of their blocks are physical, or literal. They can block careers, or relationships, or personal growth.

Sorry we're late, we got stuck behind a blocking lady going 15 mph on the road. But it's ok, because of her we missed being in an accident.
