grunge kid

Person or persons who wears ripped jeans and flannel shirts along with homemade/ simple clothing usually out of neccesity for cold. A movement started out allegedly by Kurt Cobain and His Band Nirvana. It was a long-running joke that the only reason for ripped jeans, flannel and thermals was the fact that it was cold in Washington. Grunge kids usually listen to a mixture of Punk, Grunge and some certain forms of Metal. in Appearance you average grunge kid doesnt really care about his or her appearance while grunge guys wear the flannels with usually long hair and beards of other various scruffy versions girls dress almost the same aside from heavier punk fashion influences. Then of course there is the Attitude. Severe dislike of the government yet almost apathetic efforts to fight it. grunge is spawned really from angst and indifference and generational isolation. True grunge also only speak selectively about there beliefs because they feel no one else thinks like they do.

Drug use: As rumored grunge kids do smoke pot but really the so-called godfather of grunge Kurt Cobain, never really did like his experiences with marijuana claiming it made him stupid. Mostly the average grunge kid smokes cigarettes and drinks and does acid along with your occasional heroine addict

Grunge kids interaction with others.

girl: that guy looks homeless!
guy: no he's just a grunge kid.
Grunge kid: Got a smoke?

Interactions between grunge kids and Other.

Girl: Hey look they finally impeached the President!
Grunge Boy: Who cares?

space grunge

A sub genre of grunge music that emerged in the early to mid 1990's. It is characterized by a mix of grunge, space rock, psychedelic rock, and shoe gazing. Some space grunge bands may include Failure, The Smashing Pumpkins (early), and My Bloody Valentine just to name a few.

Dude, the band Failure is like the ultimate space grunge band!

Dude, that is so correct!

indie grunge

Indie grunge is a style influenced by bands around the 1990's e.g. Nirvana, Pearl Jam etc

Indie stands for individual so 'weird and wonderful' kin of look. Mixing it with the rebellious grunge makes a softer version of it appealing to many people.
Style items include:
โ€ขDistressed jeans/shorts/tights
โ€ขBand tshirts and tshirts with some colour
โ€ขRound glasses
โ€ขCombat boots

Look at Rachel dressed in her ripped shorts tights and a band tee while listening to al bairre, she's definitely got an indie grunge style!

Aesthetic Grunge

This is definitely my personality type. Aesthetic Grunge belongs to the type of people who listen to Halsey, Melanie Martinez, or any other unknown, kind of alternative pop artist. They mostly wear black clothing with a flannel tied around their waist. Their typical emotions are anxiety, sadness, and angst. Most Aesthetic Grungies are girls between the ages of 13 and 19. They don't actually smoke, but they tell other people that they vape to seem cool or rebellious. If you're confused about this personality type, just look up "aesthetic grunge" on google images and you'll get the gist.

Normal Person: Wait, so you're not grunge?
Me: Nope.
Normal Person: Pastel Goth?
Me: I'm aesthetic grunge. It's a combination of the two.

Grunge explosion

The outbreak of grunge due to the success of Nirvana starting in 1991. Commonly compared to the outbreak of punk in the late 70s caused by the Sex Pistols. The key difference is that the Sex Pistols achieved fame from being intentionally chaotic public figures whose goal was to create controversy. They wanted the fame, because they wanted to piss Britain off. Nirvana, particularly Kurt Cobain, did not want any fame whatsoever and wished for grunge to stay underground. Their success was an accident, one that calls back to their tour with Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth had recently signed to a major record label, DGC, but with the intent of keeping their trademark noise rock and to basically sabotage and manipulate the mainstream from within. Kim Gordon then invited Kurt to have Nirvana join DGC, and though reluctant at first, they eventually went for it, growing tired of Sub Pop and assuming they could do the same as SY. Kim's fatal mistake was forgetting that Nirvana was a much younger band that did not know how to keep their success on the down low like Sonic Youth could. The mainstream, tired of new wave and hair metal, saw Smells Like Teen Spirit on MTV all across the nation and decided this was the next big thing, completely ignoring what Nirvana stood for and blindly consuming the music without thought. Thus, the grunge explosion. Only lasted about 3-4 years before being killed off by sellout post-grunge bands following what unfortunately became a mainstream trend.

Already existing bands that gained popularity during the grunge explosion include what became the big four (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains), Mudhoney, Temple of the Dog, Mother Love Bone (posthumously), Screaming Trees, the Melvins, and outside the Seattle area, Hole, Babes in Toyland, and L7. Some more than others. Then there's Stone Temple Pilots, who had a good first album, but then sold out big time, resembling post-grunge instead.
