Australia, "Old Mate" :
Used to describe a person (not present) who you do not know very well, have not known very long and is therefore not your really your mate, but you do have some sort of general interaction with.
old mate who just moved in down the road asked me to mow his lawn.

A person who intentionally steals away a person who is in a relationship.
Watch out for that guy after he stole the neighbors wife he hooked up with Mrs. Smith because he is a mate poacher.
A wildcard entrance to a conversation that you are not invited to.
"My mate has a 350 chev with a turbo 400 gearbox in his hq one tonner, its funny because the gearbox isn't actually turbo"'nasal laugh'

It's like what Aristotle says about true friendship:
"One soul in two bodies."
Not necessarily anything cheesy like you're "meant to be together" forever, but two people who compliment each other so well that it TRULY seems like they are one soul lingering in two bodies.
Isaac: "Our personalities compliment each other so perfectly..."
Olivia: "Like one 'soul' sharing two bodies. We are soul mates."
When one claims to have accomplished something that is utterly impossible this phrase should be said in response. It is usually pronounced in a sarcastic tone so the other person is informed of the person's disbelief of their claim.
Christian: "I hooked up with Georgie last night."
Joel: "Righto mate."
(i.e Georgie is mint and Christian could not have possibly got with her.)
Sathya Mate is a cool kid who likes the song Kids by MGMT and the Kooks Cover. A cool cat whom in Legal Studies Lessons likes to create forts with mattresses and also prefers a high five compared to a hand shake. Not to be confused with Daniel Mate

The general theory that your mobile phone (cell phone) knows you better than anyone else based on hearing all of your phone calls, knowing all of your texts, facebook updates, emails, GPS locations, etc. and is therefore one of your best friends. After all, there is no person or device that you interact with more than your phone.
Dave and Hal are total cell mates. That guy takes his phone with him with everywhere he goes - even the different rooms in his apartment!
