Typically a member of the lucky sperm club whos better than you in every way. They're also known to be native to northern states and universities. The opposite of trailer-trash, hicks, red-necks, and the average joe. (Also see preppy, prep, yuppie, and George W. Bush.)

A sophisticated young lady or man that is generally richer, smarter, nicer and more mature than the rest. They fear "different" clothing and "different" personalitys, they like being in their group, which is the smart rich group. They dress in polo shirts, sweaters, khakis, short skirts for the girls, pants and vest for men with shoes never sneakers, the pink polo shirt and penny loafers is not unusual. often drive volvos, bmw's. merecedes. there clean cut, and polished. they enjoy more sophisticaed activities such as golf, tennis, croquet, fencing, the richer sports. prep vacation spots include cape cod, outerbanks, maine, vermont.

As i was going through many of these definitions, it made me realize how many people are actually looking at the more movie driven looking preps than those of the real preps. i should know, i am one.
preppy people do wear Polo shirts, LL Bean and other so=uch stores as that, but we also wear uniforms. The uniforms usually consist of Polo shirts, button up collored shirts, and some kind of plaid skirt. If allowed, we wear any color we find suitable to our skin tones (usually one must wear white though). If anything in the world, we DETEST the popped collar look--that and the sweater tied around the neck look is for the movies! We do however look rather neat and quite put togather, but again that is usually the uniform pulling that look off for us. Although we do wear accesories, we in no way always wear or are quite fond of pearl headbands, necklaces, and what else one may come up with. The monogrammed items are also moive-esque. And I would like to know what a person is thinking when they say that preppy people do not match, because as i have stated--we wear uniforms. Hats are not always worn, it still gives one hat-hair and our schools don't allow it either.
We do attend prep schools (private schools, Governors schools, etc.), yet they do not have to be 100 of years old. Most of us will attend very well known colleges, yet that doesn't mean they will be located somewhere in England.
And as another point of contention, what is this business about vacationing in places such as Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and such? We go just about everywhere anyone else does, such as Bethany Beach. Nor do our families have to have been going there for over years and years--another movie-prep cliche.
Everyone's seen Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club, and other such classics from the 80s, yes? That is not preppy.

Preppy is NOT obnoxious bright color combinations of fuschia pink with flourescent green, although pink and green can be a "preppy" combination if worn by women under 21. Pink and Green is Worth Avenue in Florida. Florida is not really preppy. Massachussets is preppy. Only infants and tourists wear pink in green in Nantucket.
Preppy is NOT spending the last dollar on an ill-fitting Lilly Pulitzer outfit that one buys simply because it's (a) Lilly Pulitzer and (b) pink & green.
Preppy is not over exposing yourself to UVA rays when you lay-out for 6 hours every weekend so that you go from white Anglo to African American. Preppies do get tan, but its from sailing or playing golf, and they wear sunscreen and get out of the sun if they can't keep some resemblance of WASP-ness.
Preppy is a term to describe a clean, conservative choice of dress with most apparel able to withstand years of wear and tear from sports such as sailing, golfing, riding horses and skiing. It is not cheap synthetic fibers in bright colors just because the designer occasionally produces preppy outfits.
Preppy is classic navy blue sweaters, sailor red pants, a hunter green car and crisp white oxfords. Preppy is not a strappy, body hugging fluorescent green with bugs embroidered on it dress with hot pink trim. That's just tacky.
The preppy girls from Miss Porters, who were home for vacation but still dressed with ribbons in their hair, white monogrammed oxfords, jeans and tretorns laughed at the public school townies from Darien when the the townie in the strapless pink and green Lilly Pulitzer top tripped in her fuschia Jack Rogers sandals. It was, afterall, thanksgiving and 40 degrees outside.

1) a lifestyle mostly found in the Northeast, with a certain clothing style (see below) and traditionally associated with old families with money-WASPS, the kind of people who have mansions on the maine coast, prepratory schools, ect. not everyone who wears A & F is preppy-it's all about the name, where you go to school, and family connections. preppy is a lifestyle and can NEVER go out of fashion. those who say that preppies are brats and sluts most likely have come into contact with wannabe preppies who frequent abercrombie and fitch.
2) a clothing style including popped collars, polos, clean cut men, cardigans worn around shoulders, and belts. the look tends to be classic whether it is in or not, with headbands, pearls, bracelets, all pulling the look together. A & F favors polos, monogrammed tees, ect. but other stores that preppies shop at are ralph lauren, l.l.bean, lacoste, and petit bateau, but not always abercrombie and fitch, hollister, and guess. they do not lean toward being slutty typically, like i said they are conservative, buttoned down, and well dressed.
