light horror

Light Horror is a division in the Horror genre that categorizes horror movies from the early days of cinema, to the 1970s. The characteristics of such films, are their slow pace action, rare jump-scares, and scenes of contemporary life. They are mostly from easy to moderate to watch, and can be at times relaxing or very fun. One example would be the 70s TV series - Kolchak: Night Stalker.

The other side of the division, Heavy Horror, is on the other hand very fast paced, and doesn't give you any room to breathe. Heavy Horror features films which are very grim, dark, and show a whole slew of plots which basically have many flaws in them, and have no explainable ending. They are in essence, the film/comic/stand-alone drawing artist's attempt to create something which they think is so profound, when it's really just disturb-fucking-scary.

That recent movie, "Les Vampires", was such a light horror film.

elevated horror

A subgenre of "respectable" horror movies which began in the late 2010s. They typically carry a social or moral message and are gloomy, gory, pretentious, and aimed at an audience more interested in queer/feminist subtext than scares and fun.

Expect boilerplate Tumblr politics, graphic violence but no female nudity, and laudatory reviews describing them as "slow burns", "giallo homages", or "bonkers".

Examples: Get Out, Us, The Babadook, Hereditary, Midsommar, It Comes At Night, Suspiria 2018, Candyman 2021, The Lighthouse, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Saint Maud, Possessor, Last Night in Soho, Titane, Midnight Mass, ect.

Let's go see the new elevated horror movie by Ari Aster, everyone on Letterboxd says it's a totally bonkers slow burn!

Analog horror

An oversaturated sub-genre of horror, usually in the form of an ARG, which imitates 1960-1990 footage but usually relies on weird distorted faces and/or sound as a scare factor.
