Giving a great deal of thought to something, whether it be something quite insignificant, or a life-altering choice that has to be made. Often accompanied by a vacant stare into the room.
Sitting on salt may have two fall-outs.
1) You may find a positive conclusion and end up "using the salt" for something useful,
2) You may come to a negative conclusion and end up throwing salt in your own wounds.
Sitting on salt about anything for a long period of time is disadvised.
Huh? Oh, sorry! I was just sitting on salt, I guess...

When you're so drunk that you have to just sit in a chair for a while and watch the party. Then you rally and get up an hour later. It doesn't count if you puke.
