n. The music that is played in a corporate retail chain in order to influence the buying habits of customers. Although Retail rock varies from store to store, one thing remains consistant: the music, like the products found in the store at which it is played, is fake mass-produced garbage that must be avoided at all costs.
(1) While browsing in CVS, Barbra noticed the song playing over the store's radio was 'I Don't Want to Wait' by Paula Cole. She immediately bought several packs of Q-tips.
(2) Ashley's boyfriend watied outside Abercrombie & Fitch while she shopped for the latest fall fashions; he could hear 'No Such Thing' by John Mayer blearing over the store's speakers, and he didn't like it.

Punk rock is a style of music that doesn't always have to be fast, loud, and deliberately offensive, but usually is.
Bands that helped create this style of music would be such bands as the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Bad Religion, NOFX, the Vandals, and every single other band that keeps punk alive.
Oh and GC isn't punk, pop-punk is still good in Enemy You, Teen Idols, and the Travoltas.

A kind of music popular amoung tweens esp. in the midwest and is usualy found in the alternative rock section of a music store. Butt rock bands usualy have perdictable percusion break downs, simple bass lines, simple gutar riffs and overly emotional/ semi romantic lyrics. The trade mark of butt rock is the straind vocals that make the sinnger sound like he is constipated. This is where "butt" rock gets its name. Examples include: Hinder, Creed, Matchbox 20, three doors down, avenge seven fold, ect. Its is possable for a band to resemble butt rock but not actualy be butt rock. I.E. staind, coldplay, foo fighters.
Man, I just got back from that Creed concert and it was all butt rock.

Rock music that is played on the Top 40 stations/Radio Disney/adult Top 40 and is liked by preps. Usually the singers sing about cleaned up, preppy topics such as girlfriends, boyfriends, going to the beach, having a lot of money, the prom, going to parties, etc. The guitars are not as heavy and the music is happier and more melodic.
Preppy rock: Boys Like Girls, Faber Drive, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Hawthorne Heights, Bowling for Soup, Jonas Brothers, All American Rejects, Fall Out Boy.
Real rock: Tool, Trapt, Nirvana, Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Van Halen, The Doors, etc. Ocean Avenue is a true example of preppy rock.
