It is what it Is

in a nutshell, it means "this is the way its going right now, and thats how it is." kind of a way to say: dont overthink the situation. a reminder to keep things simple, dont overanalyze things, or a way to put a definition on something thats hard to explain.

Friend: "So what's the deal with you and Bobby? I thought you guys were together, but then someone said you broke up, and then somebody else told me you were broken up but 'friends with benefits' So what's the true relationship status?
Girlfriend: it is what it is.

it is what it is

better described as a statement of acceptance of a situation that is less than perfect.

keeping a dull, going-nowhere, job that pays the bills. "how's work?" "it is what it is."

what not

A more hip hop way of saying "etc", or a verbal way of expressing "..." It is said by those that have so much poppin' that they don't have the time or energy to explain what the "what not" is. This term should not be used by wannabe gangstas, as this will only serve to slash your street cred. People will know you have no substance behind your "what not."

"What are you doing tonight?"
"I'm gonna meet some people and what not."

And then what

When somebody starts to tell you a story that you think is going somewhere but it doesn't, so you have to ask a question (and then what?), but there is no more to the story.

Sally: These two dogs were chasing me.

Jim: And then what?
Sallly: Nothing, that's it.

what for

What For is received by those who bother the givers of what for. What For is preceded by threatening gestures and followed by pain.

Ben was pissing me off, so I gave him what for.
