hit the rock

an expression said when greeting an acquaintance or congratulating said acquaintance for a remarkable deed. hitting the rock is slowly replacing shaking hands as it is quicker, more hygienic & can be performed several times in a meeting (because of its brevity, it does not seem excessive when performed multiple times).

To properly hit the rock, one must say "...hit the rock." Then extend one's fist & gently touch the other party's clenched fist.

Yo, dude, hit the rock!

Hey, this rock isn't gonna hit itself!

Eeeyy, nice one, hit the rock!

Classic Rock

A genre of music which spanned from about the early 1960's, starting with British Invasion Rock and The Beatles, to as late as the mid 90's, by which time most of "the greats" had died.
Classic rock is remembered and revered by most in society as the grounds for all forms of rock, many of which can be linked to a specific classic rock band, such as Metal to AC/DC, and Psychadelic Rock to Pink Floyd.
There is some descrepancy as to which bands are Classic Rock bands, and which bands were simply the first in their own area. some people group british invasion rock bands, such as the beatles and the who, seperately from Classic Rock, but most include them.
Many Classic rock songs are recognized by youth today, who dont even realize that someone actually CREATED such amazing music, and in some cases children actually believe that Classic Rock song exist from their "sheer awesomeness"
Each Classic Rock band has a distinct style, making the genre incredibly diverse and experimental, unfortunately, while the exact date of the end of Classic Rock is debated (some place it as early as the late 70's to as late as the death of Freddie Mercury in 1991) it is a general consensus that Classic Rock is no longer in the making, and while it may be listened to forever, will not progress any further than it already has

Generally agreed upon Classic Rock bands include:
The Beatles
Queen
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
The Who
AC/DC
The Ramones
The Doors
Deep Purple
Jimi Hendrix
The Rolling Stones

Smart rock

Underground (indie) music that appeals to a discerning, educated audience keen on cynicism and dejected wit. The music itself is often mellow yet complex- a reflection of its audience's personality.

Smart rock is the antonym of Dude rock.

Instead of studying their AP English Literature homework, William and Sara made out to Smart rock on the couch.

indie rock

Arguably the best sub-genre of modern music today, not that that's saying much. Is highly derivative of 80s college rock and 90s alternative rock. The overall sound is often highly pretentious, and it is clear that many indie rock artists consider themselves to be musical geniuses. Never mind the fact that the songs hardly ever deviate from standard song structure and cliche lyrics(albeit in a pretentious fashion, utilizing ridiculous metaphors and overblown instrumentation). Still, a step up from the pop punk and party rap on MTV.

Arcade Fire, Death Cab for Cutie, TV on the Radio, Modest Mouse, Arctic Monkeys, Broken Social Scene, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. These are all indie rock bands. It should be noted that some of these bands take a garage rock approach, yet the ridiculously convoluted lyrics and delusions of genius remain. Sounds like some people missed the point of punk rock's simplicity.
