He portrays himself as heartless, but he cares so much and he loves hard, he just doesn't know how to show it. Be patient with him. He's just a broken guy who doesn't know love. Wait and guide him through his anger and his stupid decisions, help him get where he needs to go and stick by his side. He's not someone worth losing.
