placebo effect

This is mind over matter; when somebody believes that something will happen to his health, it does even when it wouldn't have otherwise. This generally happens when doctors tell patients that their health will improve even though there's no logical reason to believe that; the patients' optimism then helps heal them.

The doctor gave Jimmy sugar capsules and told them it would cure his headaches; it did even though the capsules didn't do anything. Classic placebo effect!

Horsecock Effect

The loudest possible rumble created when urinating in the center of the toilet, often to impress the female gender.

I totally used the Horsecock Effect last night to bag a blonde when we went to her place last night.

The Cumberbatch Effect

When the mind encounters a face that by all accounts should be seen as incredibly strange looking, but instead interprets it as ridiculously attractive. This term is displayed strongly by, and named for, British actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

Girl one: "His cheekbones don't even make sense, and his head is so tall. He should be ugly. . . why am I aroused?"
Girl two: "It's the Cumberbatch Effect"
Girl one: "It's just like James Marsters all over again"

The Goldlust Effect

Named after the Brown University scientist who first formally characterized it, The Goldlust Effect is a phenomenon in which an email recipient mentally hears the author's physical voice while reading the message. Closely related is the Holmes Effect, in which an email recipient mentally sees the author's physical mannerisms and gesticulations while reading the message.

When I started reading my old collegiate acapella friend's message, The Goldlust Effect was so strong that I instinctively turned around and accused my wife of launching vocal percussion spittle onto the back of my neck.
