Singapore Math Going Endemic

When most K–12 Singapore math writers would find it almost irresistible not to set questions on Covid-19 and its variants, masks, vaccines, and lockdowns, by adding some context to their content in their new manuscripts, unless their publishers think that it is morbid or a bad omen to do so, by rationalizing that the product of two negatives (people’s fear of math and of the virus) is not a positive in this case.

As Singapore reluctantly lives with Covid, it’s understandable that those who had lost loved ones to Covid-19 have reservations about Singapore math going endemic in this new normal.

Singapore Math, So Cheem

When someone describes the math taught in Singapore schools as being too difficult to understand, or complains that young students are unhealthily exposed to an obscene number of brain-unfriendly math questions—“cheem” means “deep” in the Chinese dialect Hokkien.

Ahmad who could hardly understand Mr. Goon’s lessons told his parents: “Singapore math, so cheem. I gave up!”

Make Singapore Free Again

The slogan the Opposition in Singapore fearfully want to use so that citizens and residents can criticize the authorities, or could stage public protests, without the risk of being arrested or sued.

The “fear factor” among Singaporeans to speak up and to speak out has numbed them and made them politically indifferent—with lawsuits against political critics on the rise in recent years, the Opposition’s promise to make Singapore free again is just a dream for now.
