gabel

Gabel (n.) -- A vaguely edible tubular circle of enriched flour dough, consumed toasted with a heavy margarine spread, commonly found in Midwestern or Southern home freezers throughout the mid to late 20th century. This term is nearly always recognized and applied retroactively by perplexed NYC visitors reconciling childhood breakfast experiences with the rich, nutty, aromatic food they find themselves eating at Zabar’s, Murray’s, Zucker’s, Tal, H&H, or Absolute.

Example. “As surprising new flavors burst forth with each successive bite of the robust chewy crust "schmeared" liberally with scallion cream cheese, Jennifer grew increasingly embittered by childhood memories of her mother serving partially thawed Lender's gabels covered with Country Crock non-hydrogenated vegetable oil spread and Smuckers.”
