This is basically where, out of a group of friends, one friend has been "thrown out" due to whatever action.
This comes from the idea where when making a cake (of friendship), all the good stuff (the good friends) go through the sieve into the mixture, while the bad, fatty stuff (said friend to be thrown out) is stuck in the sieve, ready to be thrown in the bin.
