A more appropriate word to describe girls who are rugged, sporty, NOT overtly girlish or frilly and less interested in clothes, makeup or remaining clean and pretty while playing.
Girls who play hard and are willing to get dirty and even rough, often playing in and doing typical boys activities, even though WE"RE NOT BOYS! We just know how fun it is to play like a boy ;) . But calling a rugged, street savvy girl a 'tomboy' negates her uniqueness as a non-traditional female. This way that is still honored but recognizes her tough, sporty ways.
"I was a real tomgirl as a child; complete with a boys bike, hotwheels and short hair."
"She's a total tomgirl, she just loves rough-housing in the dirt, chasing and playing hard with the boys without a worry for herself or her clothes!"

A tomgirl is similar to a Tomboy in that she likes to play sports - and can keep up with the best of them. However, while a tomboy likes to wear baggy clothes and not embrace her sexuality, the tomgirl cleans up nicely and puts pride into her personal appearance.
Wearing stilettos helped improve that tomgirl's balance thus bettering her HORSE skills.

By name alone, this term was originally used to refer to a GIRL who acted like a boy in many ways (masculine), much the same way that a Nancyboy was a BOY who acted like a girl in many ways (feminine). The name TomBoy when used to refer to a female makes zero sense. NancyBoy (girl-boy) uses a girl's name to modify the boy's behavior. TomGirl (boy-girl)functions exactly the same way. TomBoy is, in essence, Boy-Boy.
Sally is a Tomgirl, pursuing similar behaviors as the boys her age like football and baseball.

The current equivalent of a βtomboy,β (which is a more outdated way to refer to a tough girl.)
Tomboy is a term that was most used and liked by trans guys and some nonbinary people, because the label βboyβ in tomboy felt very affirming, and might still be used by closeted trans people today.
However, those who actually consider themselves girls today, may find the label βtomboyβ to be insinuating that theyβre toughness is a boy trait, which detracts from the fact that women can be strong. So maybe prefer to switch to the term tomgirl.
Jen is such a tomgirl, did you see her fixing her own car by herself the other day?
