shift knob

Noun: The object at the end of a shift lever in a manual transmission car, usually made from vinyl, leather, or metal, depending on either the manufacturer's or owner's taste.

That shift knob is pure bling.
My new shift knob is lighter and helps me shift gears better.

seismic shift

A major change. (Seismology is the study of earthquakes.) The implication is that the change being described is so significant that the earth will move under your feet. Like paradigm shift, this phrase has become overused marketing hype.

In just the last century, there has been a seismic shift in the treatment of women in this country.

suicide shift

A work shift where the workers have eight hours (or less) between the time they get off of work and their next shift. Named this way because workers who are put into this situation are usually overworked and underpaid by their boss and would rather be dead than be forced to be overworked by a company that doesn't give a shit about them. Two notable cases occurred in July 2021 with the Frito-Lays company and in August 2021 with Nabisco. Unfortunately, this has become more common since the COVID-19 pandemic started

"One of the most contentious issues throughout the bargaining process, according to union leaders, has been the regular use of forced overtime at the plant that results in so-called 'suicide shifts' where "'many of the more than 800 workers at the plant are only getting an eight-hour break between shifts."'

-NPR

"Alongside low pay, treatment of employees is coming to the surface. Workers at Frito-Lay—which also exceeded its profit goals during the pandemic—went on strike for three weeks this summer, citing concerns over forced overtime, 100-degree plus conditions, and 'suicide shifts.' The workers were successful in ending the practice of assigning the grueling 12-hour shifts, which took place less than 8 hours apart...Parent conglomerate Mondelez International angered employees when it proposed turning eight-hour shifts into 12-hour ones without overtime."

D shift

The red head step children of the fire dept. If you like days off while working, D shift is the best fit for you. The installment of D shift was to give the other 3 much needed rest for carrying the dept. If your house is on fire, better hope D shift isn’t working.

D shift must be working...The rig is dirty and barely any fuel.

I tweaked my back, I’m gonna switch to d shift for few months!

Beaver shift

When a beaver goes out to collect wood during the day and when the sun goes down a different beaver comes out to collect wood and take the first beavers place.

When is my beaver shift?
Is the next beaver shift soon?

crap shifting

Passing your crap to a family member, friend or other party. Furniture, appliances, toys, clothing - most of the stuff we have is crap we don't need and eventually crap we don't want. So we shift it to someone else to make room for new crap.

To make room for new furniture, we'll need to do some crap shifting. Maybe your cousin will take the sofa.

Do we really need four kayaks? Maybe we can crap shift a couple to your brother for his family to use.
