Originally an acronym typically taken to stand for "laughing out loud" (also occasionally "lots of laughs," "lots of love," "lots of luck") in internet forums, chat rooms, and text messages, it has evolved to fit a role as an indicator either of the tone of a previous statement, or an acknowledgement that a message was received through an online medium.

Because of the nature of conversations occurring through text, it is not always simple for the intended audience to know whether a statement was meant to be comical, hostile, serious, written in anger, etc. Ending a textual statement with "lol" is an indicator that the statement was made in jest or without any intended hostility toward the recipient(s).

When used as an indicator of reception, "lol" signifies that the recipient was present, though it is rarely an indicator that they actually read the message they received.

"lol" is sometimes used in spoken conversation as an interjection pronounced either as "el oh el" or "lawl" and typically indicates excitement, enthusiasm wry amusement, irony, or skepticism.

"Gosh, I can't stand you! lol"

or

Sender: "Hey. Just got back from work and found out my uncle died. :("

Recipient: "lol"

lol

An abbreviation for "Laugh Out Loud" that is used in cyberspace. It is rarely (if ever) meant literally. Maybe there was a time that it LITERALLY meant "Laugh Out Loud", however, I have been active in cyberspace for over ten years and am unaware of this time.

What โ€œlolโ€ is, is simply one of the many โ€˜online lingoesโ€™ that are used to communicate things that IRL (in real life) would otherwise be communicated through either voice tone or body language. In particular, โ€œlolโ€ is used to signify that the individual typing it finds something humorous about what they are saying EVEN IF this individual typing it may not literally be "laughing out loudโ€

"lol" and most other 'online lingo' also tend to be used in text messages and high school note-passing. And with the exception of text messages (when laziness may ensue), the first letter to โ€œlolโ€ is not usually capitalized, even when it is the start of a sentence or a sentence by itself.

He got hit by a car! lol
