the rock

The nickname for the 19,000-seat Kidd Brewer Stadium on the campus of Appalachain State University in Boone, N.C. "The Rock" is where the Mountaineers, the 2005 NCAA Division I-AA Football National Champions, destroy Southern Conference and other opponents each Saturday during the fall and early winter months. The Mountaineers' winning streak at "The Rock" is approaching 25 (as of Nov. 18, 2006), one of the longest in all of college football. The most memorable moment in the stadium's history came in early December 2005, when the Mountaineers defeated SoCon rival Furman in a thrilling National Semifinal game with a national audience watching on ESPN2 as the ASU faithful ripped down the goal posts after the Mountaineers clinched the school's first berth in the National Title game. The largest crowd ever approached 27,000.

Reporter: "Coach, why do you look so worried?"
Furman Coach: "Well, son, you'd be worried, too, if you had to go play The Champs in the loudest, rowdiest stadium in all of I-AA football, 'The Rock.'"
