Dead Phone Syndrome

noun: When you call people, but none pick up, as if simulatenously all telecommunication services are disabled.
Can stretch over the course of an hour to over a day.

drop dead message

A useless (toy) computer message with no remedial action suggested.
The general meaning is that this is the end of the line and you made the wrong choice in the beginning. Also, a message with remedial action suggested that could have been automated.

I just got a drop dead message that says "UNABLE TO OPEN FILE" as in wouldn't it be nice if the genius programmer would tell us more specifically what the problem is and what we might do about it. If the message says "You must dial a 1 before this number", one wonders why the system couldn't just make life a bit easier.

dead beat dad

A man who does not pay child support and/or maintain regular contact with his children. Or a bum who, though still sleeping with the mother, does nothing to contribute to the household either financially or by taking care of the home/children. Often an abusive man or an addict. Always lazy and self absorbed.

My mother had to garnish my dead beat dad's paycheck, but we still never hear from him.

Dead Genius Award

Fictional award bestowed upon individuals whose genius has become exaggerated as a result of their untimely death, usually before the age of 30. The award is usually presented by individuals who realise that music fans, the music industry and media often get carried away, mistakenly believing that any musician who dies young was a genius. Those bestowing the imaginary award are also able to entertain the idea that a musician who died young might have gotten fat, old or made a crap album. There is no official ceremony for the award as it is fictional and is often allocated during pointless conversations between friends. Many a Dead Genius Award is awarded each year with no official committee to decide who most deserves the award. This is mainly out of respect for the friends and family of the dead.
Candidates for the award include Tupac Shakur, Kurt Cobain and Jeff Buckley.

Person A: 'Dang, Nirvana weren't actually THAT good were they?'
Person B: 'Nah mate, i think Kurt's up for a dead genius award dont you?'

dead cat bounce

Wall Street expression describing the phenomenon of a stock or share bottoming out to near zero and then recovering with a sharp buying spree from bargain hunters: the notion being that even a dead cat will bounce if dropped from a high-enough point.

Your stock prices going up is no more than a dead-cat bounce: it doesn't have the juice to stay up.
