Stutter-Reading

The act of trying to read your morning newspaper on a bumpy train or commuter bus.

I tried to read my morning newspaper but the train was so bumpy I could only focus on every other word - I was stutter-reading.

spark-read

rather than legitimately read the assigned novel, you read the sparknotes instead.

Because Frankenstein is a shitty book, i decided to spark-read it to save time.

reading someone

A gaming slang, meaning "predicting someone else's actions or movement". Mostly used in games where you need to hit your opponent with projectiles or attacks, while they try to avoid getting hit by you.

"Wow, I read him(reading someone) like a book"

silent reading

the long and annoying 10 minutes at the start of an english lesson where the class is silent reading or acting that they're silent reading whilst the teacher uploads the powerpoint. you can usually hear a lot of shuffling, muffled sniffles and whispers about how someone wet themselves at lunch.

failure to bring in a silent reading book can usually end you up with a 10 page essay.

english teacher - ok everybody, 10 minutes of silent reading everybody and i'll take the register. where's your silent reading book?
student - at home, sorry.
english teacher - that's it, the third time this week! 10 page essay for monday, is that understood?

Night Reading

This is the opposite of DayDreaming.

Katie: Hey, bro, what book are you reading?
Josh: I have no idea. I just put my finger in the book night read it.

Katie: Huh?
Josh: Yeah, you know how when you're in school and you're reading in class and your mind wanders off?
Katie: Ya, like daydreaming?
Josh: Exactly! But the opposite! Night Reading is when you sleep while holding a book, and while you're asleep you'll just absorb the information.

Close Reading

When you heavily analyze someone’s Instagram post or general personal information to figure out who they are as a person/ what is going on.

Very similar to stalking but with an intellectual and analytical twist.

Like criminal minds- but taking it too far.

Friend 1 - Did you see Sam’s Instagram post?

Friend 2 - Yeah I did. It was so chaotic that I had to do a full close reading last night.

Friend 1- Did you hear that Ariana and Finn got back together again?

Friend 2- Wait what!? We need to close read this situation later so we can fully understand what is going on.

read about it

To look into something. To show someone something or make a point

Boy 1: I'm back and better than ever and they don't want me be.
