guard-core

A mockery of "hardcore" defined as a member of the National Guard (typically, though not necessarily a Guard Bum) who has served six years or more without a combat deployment, avoids deployments, or always seems to end up with cushy missions to Europe, the Baltic, or Central America. A Guard-Core Soldier or Airman is usually seen decked-out in more gear than necessary, is typically overly enthusiastic given his/her limited experiences, and frequently incorporates recruiting paraphernalia into his/her daily civilian wardrobe.

"Sergeant X is pretty Guard-Core considering he is overweight, has made a twenty year career out of the Guard and his only time spent overseas was that two-week trip to Latvia. Where does he get all those National Guard polo shirts? Why hasn't he gone to Iraq like the rest of the National Guard?"

core dump

(1) A term used in computer programming to describe when a program fails. The program then dumps a core, which, in the ancient days of programming, poor code monkeys had to go through to see what was wrong.
(2) A term used by anyone familiar with definition (1) to mean a loss of memory.

(1)
> a.out
> Segmentation Fault (Core Dumped)

(2)
It's the middle of the big exam, and everything rides on the knowledge the test-taker has known for a long time. They're prepared to take the test when suddenly:

"*(*#%#(*&%!!!! MY BRAIN JUST CORE DUMPED!"

And that's a core dump. There goes any chance of a good grade.

Core Duo

Intel's dual-core successor to the Pentium M. Previously codenamed Yonah, the Core Duo is a processor designed specifically around performance-per-watt - in other words, trying to produce an energy-efficient CPU that does not compromise severely on speed. As such, it has replaced the PowerPC G4 processor in Apple's Powerbooks (now called MacBook Pro) as part of Apple's widely-acclaimed switch to Intel processors and the X86 architecture. Core Duos will also be used by major computer manufacturers in their laptops, and can also be found in Apple's new iMac Core Duo.

The Core Duo will soon be replaced (Q4 of 2006) by Intel processors Conroe and Merom, which will be 64-bit chips with similar energy savings as the Core Duo but boasting more cache, improved performance and less heat production.

My MacBook Pro with Core Duo processor total smokes your PowerPC G4.
(second person) Yeah, but I don't need to emulate PPC apps in Rosetta!
