It's a dig on capitalism by saying that the collection of money is an immobilizing plague that is consuming the very excitement and passion that humans have for life. It describes the one that you could predicate the phrase to be about, Obe and his financial struggles that he has faced throughout his childhood, while also saying that those struggles have shaped him as a person and the surrounding environment around him, friends, housing, life, showing that these struggles have made him able to shape his own surroundings, no longer restricted by money and man-made paper.
