A genre' of music as well as a 'fashion' and part of an individuals personality. Most 'Indie' people consider themselves the gurus of music and that their genre' of music is the only one able to be appreciated as 'real' music.
Indie's give off a very elitist asshole attitude which is unbelievably annoying.
They claim to only listen to 'underground' music that isn't widely popular or common, which is contradicted by bands like Radiohead or artists like Adam Young from Owl City.
According to Indie kids, Adam Young is a sell-out?
Basically, if you're an artist who makes money, you are no longer considered popular amongst Indie kids.
Also, Indie people like to put themselves above the other social status of 'Emo' although they appear to be insanely similar, besides attitude. Also, 'Scene' kids seem to differ from Indie. Basically, you have to be a total douche bag to be an Indie kid who likes to put themselves above everyone else because they have a depressing home / school life and they've mastered the art of alienation.
In essence, an Indie = Emo / Scene without the whining emotion, and more of a stuck-up princess attitude.
Person: Hey, a friend told me you liked Modest Mouse?
Indie Kid: Not anymore?
Person: How come...?
Indie Kid: They're sell-outs and totally unoriginal...don't talk to me about 'good' music.
Person: ...I see... O.o lol?

Indie boys do not always have long hair, Some indies tend to have stylish hair and like to wear skinny jeans sometimes and occasionally printed t-shirts . They also hate chavs and emos =

crappy type of music that indie scene kids will call independent/non-mainstream music. its not mainstream because it sucks, and it usually ends up just being emo anyways.
indie sucks. id rather listen to bands that everyone knows about because theyre good. thats why everyone knows about them.

indie is another word for independent. someone who wants to be something other than wot everyone else is. the problem is theres only so many things u can be so in the end indie is just another word for someone who thinks there different by wearing all the same stuff the other different people wear.
Kind of like an emo in denial.
INDIE: i'm so different and independent; i dont wear any of this adidas rubish or listen to "rock". i wear converse and listen to music people have never heard of... like muse and other famous bands.

Indie (independent) rock. While once more of a meaningful genre with independent bands on independent record labels, it is now emo's up and coming brother, loved by both annoying scenesters and mainstream fans alike. Being on a mainstream label kind of defeats the purpose of being called "indie."
Indie kid: Hey, let's go listen to Interpol or the Blood Brothers.
Emo kid: Sure, they're pretty cool. Maybe we could listen to some Bright Eyes afterwards, and cry or something.
Indie kid: I can't believe how cool we are.
