A cut is a period of burning more calories than you consume, as a means to lose overall body fat/weight while maintaining as much muscle mass as possible.

The term "cutting" in sports, athletics, and training comes from the expression "cutting the fat" in which you lower your body fat percentage while trying to lose as little muscle mass etc as posible.

Well, to me cutting is not for attention sometimes you dont have to be sad or depressed to cut sometimes it happens because you are sad and really want to see if it works then you get addicted you don't have to me mentally sad to cut it can just be apart of addiction and you just can't stop doing it , like smoking you smoke even when you're not stressed. At least its how it is for me☺
