It's easy to see how this nation inspired George Orwell to write 1984 . Russia has never been a " normal" European country" . Whether it is now or when they were a totalitarian, Communist country, like North Korea or before that. When for centuries, Russia under the Tsars, was a brutal feudal- style society, with a population comprised almost entirely of serfs ( Basically slaves).
Russia has always been a very extreme country and the Russians have a cultural impulse. Towards adulating all of their "great leaders" (Who for centuries have been perpetually psychotic) to the point of it being weird and creepy. Russia is essentially a 3rd world country with nukes and nobody would care about it, were it not for their imperialism.
As for centuries s they have pursued an aggressive foreign policy.
Based on brutally oppressing any smaller neighbours. So they may add them them to the Russian Empire or rule them as puppets. While they impose their backward, poor, corrupt, authoritarian, civilisation model on them. Several hundreds years worth of this sort of behaviour and many other forms of aggression are why this country is so hated.
Russia is a curse to Europe. It is like a neighbour you wish you never had.
Russia is the largest nation in the world, bordering 14 countries (or debatably 18), it spans eastern europe and northern asia, its capital city is Moscow and its largest cities are Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Chelyabinsk, Krasnoyarsk, Kazan, Krasnodar and Rostov-on-Don, it has 5 puppet states (South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Donetsk, Luhansk, Belarus), it annexed crimea in 2014 and launched an all out invasion of ukraine in 2022, the war is currently in a stalemate, officially it is a democratic state but in practice it is a dictatorship run by putins political party, united russia, russias history started in the kievan rus but the part you care about started in 1991 when the USSR collapsed, russia was in economic ruin at this point, in the 2000s russia invaded georgia, setting up the puppet states of abkhazia and south ossetia, then in 2014 the pro russian government in ukraine was overthrown, and in response russia annexed crimea to maintain their power on the black sea, in 2022 russia invaded ukraine, officially to liberate donetsk and luhansk, currently the war is in a stalemate
