Fanfiction is written by a community of people, also known as Fandoms, who write they're own stories based off novels, Tv shows, anime, games etc. The length of fanfiction also depends on the writer, but most fall somewhere between 1000 and 23000 words.
Fanfiction has ratings and different genres, that can be found in tags. Ratings are usually rated from G to E on Archive of our own. On fanfiction.net, they can be rated by K's etc.
Some fanfictions can keep the original story setting but change the characters relationship.
Others are Au's, where they can create a whole new plot etc..
Most Shippers write fanfiction between their ships.
Keep in mind Fanfiction can be written by all ages, so fanfiction is different, some do not have good grammar etc.. be nice, they're just writing fanfiction for fun and to share what they like(Don't criticize them).
Most fanfictions are found online.
Keep in mind fanfiction haters, if you write your own stories based off something else, it is a fanfiction.
(Sidenote): Fanfiction does not have to be smut or lemon.
Mary loved writing and she really wanted the two characters to get together in the book she was reading, so she decided to write a fanfiction based off the book. In the story, she twisted things around so the twos characters ended up together. A lot of people in the fandom liked her fanfiction, even though the grammar was bad.
Fanfiction is fiction (Generally stories or poems) written by the fans. It is separated into genres, like alternate universe, angst, poetry, romance, smut, or fantasy, and is either a multi-chapter series or a one-shot. It is usually shared on sites for storywriting or blogs, like Fanfiction.net or Wattpad.
I read a RWBY fanfiction about Qrow and Raven in the Vytal Festival as students... it was great!
Fanfiction is pretty much any fictional story written by a fan about the thing they are a fan of. This could mean fictional stories about celebrities/a celebrity or characters from a book/movie/etc. or even just fictional stories set in a setting unique to a specific book/movie/etc.
Fanfiction is often posted on websites such as wattpad.com, fanfiction.net and asianfanfics.com
Eg.1 "I'm reading a really good Hunger Games fanfiction where Katniss doesn't volunteer for her sister."
Eg.2 "Did you finish writing your fanfiction about Taylor Swift?"
A story written by fans about a particular TV show, movie, PS2 game, etc.

Fanfiction (also known as Fanfics) is writing that remixes characters, places, or plots from existing narratives to tell new, original stories. Existing narratives could mean things like popular books, TV shows, movies, games, comics, or plays. Some types of fanfiction even cast real people as characters in the stories. Fanfiction can expand the story world or can take known characters in completely new directions.
Fangirl 1: Hey I'm writing a new fanfiction
Fangirl 2: OMG what's it about
Fangirl 1: You, me, and our favorite ban
Fangirl 1's sister: you two need a life

Where the fandom often pretends that the writers got it wrong.
Irene: "I wrote some fanfiction where Fred Weasley survived the Battle of Hogwarts and he and George move their shop to Hogsmeade."
Benita: "That's not what happened in the books."
Irene: "Er, yeah. That is why it is FANFICTION."
Benita: "Oh, right."

A fun pass time for anyone to partake in, fanfiction (often abbreviated into 'fanfic' or 'fic'). Various types of fanfiction include, but are not limited to…
•Oneshot (A fanfic that is one chapter long)
•Twoshot (A fanfic that is two chapters long)
•Threeshot (A fanfic that is three chapters long)
•Novel-length
•Short story
•Drabble (one-hundred or near words in length)
•Ficlet (shorter than a drabble, yet still relevant enough to be a story)
There are many more, but listing them all would take too long.
Many of them are written by illiterate idiots who don't bother to proofread or use a spell-check, and they often have many horrible stories. However, there are plenty of literate, believable, proofread fanfictions out there if you know where to look.
Almost any genre and scenario has been written at least once. And pairings are never-ending as well.
•Slash (MxM)
•Femmeslash/Femslash (FxF)
•Gen (No relationship, or it's not a big part)
•Het (MxF)
Those are types of pairings. Fanfiction can be an amazing thing if you know how and where to look for it. (Hint: archiveofourown.org AO3 is a great place with a great community. I wouldn't recommend FanFiction.net simply because of the lack of acknowledgement for new writers)
Happy reading!
Person One: Man, that Death Note fanfiction I read last night was awesome!
Person Two: What was it called? I want to check it out.
