progressive metal

A subgenre of metal incorporating elements from progressive rock. The earliest bands to fuse these two genres together were Dream Theater, Watchtower, Psychotic Waltz, and Fates Warning. (Although some argue King Crimson were ahead of their time doing this with 21st Century Schizoid Man.)

Keyboards/synths, and other instruments not seen as often in the metal genre are more commonly used in progressive metal.

It's common for progressive metal acts to have very long song lengths with plenty of complex instrumental sections which give the musicians a lot of room to show off. Odd-time signatures are also are commonly implemented.

Progressive metal lyrics tend to be very cerebral, with elements of fantasy, psychology, and science fiction thrown into the mix. (The sort of lyrics you'd expect from Stephen Hawking or Sigmund Freud if they ever formed a heavy metal band.)

Dream Theater, Psychotic Waltz, Fates Warning, Watchtower, Galactic Cowboys, Kings X, Spiral Architect, Symphony X, Andromeda, Shadow Gallery, Ayreon, Green Carnation, Winds, Liquid Tension Experiment, Superior, The Gathering circa-Mandylion

Thrash Metal

A Sub-Genre of Metal made popular during the 80's originally by bands such as Motorhead and Venom. Metallica then took the style and made it into a more popular and prominent style. Other bands through the Thrash ages are Overkill, Exodus, Testament, Megadeth, Sepultura, Vio-Lence, Dark Angel, Death Angel, Kreator and so forth.

Basically Thrash is a fast paced Metal style that usually includes lots of Palm Muting on the top E string and mega fast solo's.

Metal Gear

Term applied to bipedal tanks, designed primarily to launch ICBMs from any point on Earth, thus rendering the concept of nuclear deterance moot, as well as eliminating the need for expensive silos or nuclear subs.

Metal Gears also serve the role of assault, artillery, anti-vehicle, anti-personell, escort, theatre-missile-defence, as well as numerous other functions with their heavy armaments. The numerous models over the decades have been armed with heavy machine-guns, rockets, hellfire missles, laser systems, rail-guns, hydro-cannons, and various other conventional and unconventional weapons.

In addition to carrying ICBMs, Metal Gears have been known to carry cluster-bombs, cruise missiles, and various other assault payloads in its missile tubes.

The Metal Gear is a fictional weapon-system.

No government has stepped forward for the nuclear attack, and no nation can be accused. NATO suspects that a Metal Gear was involved.
