private equity fund

(FINANCE) business entity formed to pool money provided by investors in order to buy majority stakes in existing companies. A common practice is to then "take the company private," so that it no longer has shares trading on the stock market. The company is then restructured, so that it has entirely different management practices, or a different business strategy. Afterward, the PE fund will most likely re-sell the company on the stock market in a sponsored IPO.

Private equity funds are usually limited liability partnerships (LLPs), which gives them special privileges of nondisclosure; most are organized in the State of Delaware. PEF's have sponsors, or "principals," who are responsible for organizing the fund and recruiting other investors.

Among the best-known PE funds are Blackstone Group*, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR)*, Goldman Sachs Capital Partners*, Carlyle Group, Permira, Apollo Management, Providence Equity, TPG Capital, Warburg Pincus, and Cerberus. Companies marked with an asterisk (*) are publically listed corporations; most PE funds are pivately managed. The selection above includes the largest ones by capital under management.

The private equity fund first appeared in the 1970's as a result of changes to ERISA. Institutional investors, usually pension funds, could be legal partners in an LLP; they also required a place to park assets with very high rates of return.

In the USA, PE funds have long been sinecures for the most powerful political dynasties: the Rockefellers, the Romneys, the Bushes, and others.

Private Pyle

To 'do' a 'Private Pyle' is an action; usually this action is performed by a person of average intelligence and involves becomming totally un-hinged and without rudimentary competance when working on a Compaq Rack, full of mission critical Server equipment.

Systems Tech 1: "Shit...did you hear what that Support dude did?"

Systems Tech 2: "Man was he dumb...he Private-Pyled that whole Rack of kit"

Support Tech 1: "(snigger)...yeah - what a dumb-ass"

Support Tech 2: "Yeah - I think he was Millhouse'd..."

The SMIC Private School

The ultimate underdog school with Asians taking up 99.99% of the student body. The remaining 0.01% are the Pelachiars and Markoffs.

The IT department needs funds but being the underdog school means students can still survive with slow internet and the aging Lenovo computers. The printers always run out of ink so students can be seen using that excuse when asked to turn in homework.

The Athletic department is top notch. H. Canfield is the boss. He's organized, efficient, and very friendly. He makes the effort of showing up at every single home or away game, may it be soccer, volleyball, basketball or badminton. He is definitely the best A.D. in Shanghai. B. Bates, the man. This guy gets stuff done. Don't be fooled by his looks. He is the BEST coach, teacher, father-figure, friend you can find. He never lets his kids down and will stand up for them no matter what. Coolest teacher at the school.

Students usually complain about the tough material but all of them end up loving S. Han and thank her for those hell years. R. Cabanos is nice but don't mess with the man. He will rip your head off if you take advantage of his kindness. His brownies are to die for.

The school is slowly falling apart because of the administration screw but the great teachers who are still there are the ones keeping it together.

I went to the SMIC Private School because it was cheaper than SAS/BISS/YCIS/SCIS/SHS/Concordia/Dulwich/German School. I got a real education, I dated my best friend's ex-boyfriends, and now I'm fucked cause I don't know what it's like in the real world.

Own private Idaho.

This is a phrase taken directly from the 1980 dance pop song, "Your Own Private Idaho" by the outrageous party band, the B-52's.

It means "living inside an Idaho potato", or a very small space. Metaphorically, it refers to someone who is not paying attention because he is daydreaming, or under the influence, or otherwise wrapped up within his own very narrow sphere of interest or frame of reference.

Car Driver: Damn! That guy just pulled out in front of me as if I weren't here! We almost crashed!

Passenger: Yeah, he's just yakking away on his cellphone, in his own private Idaho.
