goth

1. A barbaric tribe that brought down Rome centuries ago.

2. A currently religion easily mixed up with Pagan.

3. Stereotypically, people who dress in dark, morbid clothes and listen to goth and industrial bands.

Goth Bands: Sisters Of Mercy, Bauhaus, Joy Division, London After Midnight, The Damned, Mission UK, etc.

NON-Goth Bands: Evanescence, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Linkin Park, KoRn, etc. The Cure is New Wave, NOT goth! They were only goth rock for ONE album!

Goth

As there are many definitions and stereotypes surrounding Goths, let me just put it this way:

My definition of "Goth"
----------------------------------------------------------
Goths are people who just be themselves. They don't wear black all the time. They aren't all depressed. They aren't all emo. Most of them don't shop at Hot Topic. They don't all have to listen to Gothic Rock. THEY AREN'T ALL SATANIC. They aren't all suicidal. They aren't all violent. Most of them laugh (and some of them laugh more than others). I could go on and on, correcting stereotypes, but I have a life, as all other Goths do (and what do you know, there goes another stereotype).

Poser: liek, oh my goth, hot topic is sooooooo goth!

Actual Goth: Hot Topic is a stereotypical 'goth' store that actually has nothing to do whatsoever with Gothic Fashion. Go ahead and shop there if you want, poser.

(Army of Chav Friends Surround Poser)

Chavs: @@@@@@@@@@@@@@ defend defend @@@@@@@@@@@@@ yo, 'choo hasslin 'im for, dawg? dat aint kool! @@@@@@@@@@@@@@ defend defend

Actual Goth: Um... may I have a translation, please?

Chavs: Er... what?

Actual Goth: Tell me what you said in English, please.

Chavs: poser! ur nawt goth, dawg! u dont shop at hottopic or listen to marilyn manson or dress in all black or be violent or anythin!

Lead Chav: cmon, mah homies! lets blow this popsicle stand an pimp up the park! well leaf dis here poser to rot at dis dump!

Actual Goth (to self): I guess this is a case of "Monkey see, monkey do."

Goth

A goth is a person who generally wears black clothing, and wears make-up regardless of gender.

A lot of goths listen to a range of music, not all necessarily even metal. (side note: I would like to point out that it is NOT SlipKnoT's fault they were included in this 'Nu-metal' idea, they are a heavy metal band, and that is that)

Anyway, most goths are intelligant. They do not start fights with Chavs, because they know there is no point at all.

Goths are not Satanists, a small amount of them may well be, but mostly they just LOOK intimidating, that's why Chav's tend to attack in packs of about 20, so there is no chance of Goths defending themselves, but I think if there was a 1 on 1, a Goth would win hands-down.

All goths have their own styles of clothing, all different in several ways, whereas all Chavs look the same, in their fake gold and fake burbery (if that is spelled right). Chavs also use the same old insults at goths, like 'Greeb''Greebo' etc..

Anyway, because I don't know what else to say, here is a list of metal bands than goths are likely to listen to:

13 Candles, 1349, 3 Inches Of Blood, 5000 BC, 9X Dead, Abigail's Mercy, AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Amon Amarth, Angra, Antaia, Anthrax, Apparition, Arcane Theory, Arch Enemy, As I Lay Dying, At The Gates, Atura, Avenged Sevenfold, Black Sabbath, Black Label Society, Bleeding Through, Bile, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Chaos Incarnated, Children Of Bodom, Chimaira, City In Ruins, Coal Chamber, Conquest Of Steel, Cradle Of Filth, Creed, Darkthrone, Daysend, Deathstars, Denied Faith, Destruction 412, DevilDriver, Dimmu Borgir, Dirty Little Child, Dissection, Disturbed, Dope, Dragonforce, Dream Evil, Drowning Pool, Drop Dead Evil, Dry Kill Logic, Enchained, Enlisted Menace, Ensiferum, Enslaved, Evanescence, Fear Factory, Fear My Thoughts, Finntroll, Flaw, God Forbid, Godsize, Godsmack, Graveworm, Habitual, Hammerfall, Hanzel und Gretyl, Hard8Eight, HIM, Holotype, Ill Nino, Immortal, In Flames, inTERRORGATE, Iron Maiden, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Judas Priest, Kamelot, Killswitch Engage, Kittie, KoRn, Kreator, Lacuna Coil, Lamb Of God, Linkin Park, Lordi, Machine Head, Marilyn Manson, Mastodon, Megadeth, Megahurz, Meshuggah, Millencolin, Mother Earth, Motorhead, Mudvayne, Murderdolls, Mushroomhead, Napalm Death, Necrophagist, Nevermore, Nightwish, Nile, NIN, Nirvana, Obituary, Omnium Gatherum, One Minute Silence, Opeth, Orgy, Overlorde, Pantera, P.O.D, Primal Fear, Queen, Queensryche, Quiet Riot, Rage, Rage Against The Machine, Rammstein, Rhapsody, Riot, Ripped Speed, Roadrunner United, Satyricon, Screams for Tina, Sepultura, Severed, Six Feet Under, Skindred, Slayer, Slaves on Dope, SlipKnoT, Smokin' Tequila, Sonata Arctica, Soulfly, Staind, Static-X, Spineshank, Status Quo, Steel Dragon, Steve Vai, Stone Sour, Symphony In Peril, System Of A Down, Sub Dub Micromachine, Terror Rain, The Misfits, Trivium, Turisas, Unleash The Fury, Vader,Van Halen, Vehemence, Venom, Viking Skull, Violent Work of Art, Vital Remains, Winter Solstice, Within Temptation

Goth

the incorrect term used to describe/stereotype people who wear black, hate people, and listen to metal. They may also be suicidal. The goths were actually a people who invaded the roman empire.

even though marilyn manson is awesome, he is not a goth. Goths should have a new stereotypical name.

Goth

And here is "Goth," defined for the two hundred and sixty ninth time. . .

Firstly, the word "Goth" is a label, a false thing intended to categorize individuals into groups, so as the better for Society to "understand" them. This illusion of "understanding" is, at best, superficial, thus also false.

Unfortunately, many Goths do happen to fit their stereotypical descriptions, as do members of nearly every other demographic in Society. If stereotypes were not at least 50% accurate, they would likely not exist. Such stereotypical Goths are usually referred to as "poseurs" or "Mansonites", which indicates that they are generally considered NOT to be true individuals, but rather confused and maladaptive people desperately looking for a group which with they can identify. This state is typically transitory. If the poseur matures and evolves, they realize that "Goth" is a STATE OF MIND rather than a "fashion statement."

Most true Goths do NOT look abnormal, nor do they fantasize about becoming a character out of a bad Anne Rice novel (who, incidentally, has just become a "Born Again"). People who violate this rule are typically just acting out a passing fad. True Goths have ALWAYS been Dark.

"Dark" is not synonymous with evil -- although pea brained sheeple, with their misguided preconceptions, will violently disagree. To them, being "different" is somehow a crime against Society. Darkness, IMHO, is nothing more than realistic pragmatism. Life is suffering (Buddha said that), and Death comes to us all -- often unexpectedly. Darkness is simply a tacit acceptance of facts that the sheeple would rather deny.

A Goth is typically more intelligent and open-minded than the average citizen -- especially about political and theological matters (whereas, the average citizen is neither informed or tolerant of different views).

Goth cannot be defined musically. My musical tastes vary on a regular basis. There are very few "must have" CDs, and even those are debatable. There is no "required" Goth literature or film.

Some Goths feel most comfortable wearing a lot of black -- this is a matter of personal opinion. Personally, I prefer dark green. Female Goths can wear whatever they want (especially if they're hot). Male Goths (who would prefer to be acknowledged as heterosexual males) should definitely avoid: frills, lace, fishnet, mascara, excessive use of hair products, and those ridiculous capes.

Oh, and while many Goths do consider themselves to be tolerant pacifists (i.e., "bully magnet"), quite a few adhere to a much different philosophy. For every "frail and pale Goth wussy", there's a Goth who works out and carries a blade. For example, I can do 50 pushups in under a minute, and am currently carrying a stiletto with a 6" blade (Ti-Lite VI). I have heard of very few Goth bullies (and most of those were surely poseurs), but I've met quite a few Goths -- both male and female -- who, while typically avoiding trouble, will steadfastly refuse to be victimized, and will not hesitate to stand up for those whom they feel are being wrongfully persecuted, regardless of the consequences.

Marilyn Manson is a poseur, NOT a Goth!

goth

goths are not dark, depressing and all that, im called a goth nearly every day, i hang round with goths, skaters, emos, chavs, everyone really. i dont dress in black because im always depressed i wear it 'cause i want to, and i have never seen anyone wear an outfit anything like one of mine. yes i do get depressed sometimes but i can also be insanely hyper, which i am most of the time, yes i do listen to heavy rock, death metal, emo, screamo.... but i do also have a massive RnB CD, althoug addmittedly i dont listen to that as much as i listen to rock, yes i do know goths that cut themselves but i also know alot of preppy girls that do to, and these are the same girls that diss goths and call them 'f**kin wrist slitters' when only one or two people in our group of well over 20 in school do actually cut themselves. if any groups dont get along round here its goths and chavs, but like i said, i get along great with some and hang aruond with them all the time. i do wear eyeliner and i know boys that do to, people say all goths and emos are depressing but were just the same as everyone else out there, just we have a different stle of clothing. to me it seems the other way around, when im out with my 'goth' friends i have loads of fun as they are the craziest and most hyper people i'v ever met, but then i see a group of 'chavs' sat on a wall lookin gloomy only for them to turn around and say something about depressing goths(no offence, some are awesome). i can accept anyone or at least give them a chance, but no one accepts me because of the way i dress. We live in a world where no matter what someone says, does or wears you will be stereotyped, and there will always be someone out there who will dilike something, if not everything, about you and your group of friends and the people you talk to. surely if a 14 year old girl can see that there is no difference between herself and anyone else, why cant the rest of the world be the same instead of having a verbal war waging between groups?

im not the stereotype goth and very few are, im not from an upper class family, im not a complete idiot, ima christian and go to church(!)and no its not a satanic church, i dont smoke or do drugs. im just a normal kid with an individual sense of style and music preference, the same as every other teenage goth really.
