freedom of speech

I'd like to provide you all with some text i've recieved in a journalism class. The entire first quarter of the year was spent on the first amendment. Our rights of the first one inlclude ONLY these: Freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and right to petition. For the freedom of speech part, there ARE some limits. Some legal limits. They are:

Clear and Present Danger
Fighting Words
Libel and Slander
Obscenity
Conflight with Other Legitimate Social Or Governmental Interests
Time, Place and Manner

So no, you dont have the legal right to say 'fuck you' on national television, or show your tits during a superbowl halftime show. I agree that we SHOULD be able to curse etc. as we feel, but there do need to be a few limits so that we dont abuse it. Just so everyone knows, the 5th one means that in times of crisis(war) the government can restrict it for security(idioticly). They can also place a gag order on the press during war and participants in a trial. I agree this is idiocy, but you have no constitutional right to tell someone to fuck themself on CSPAN.

Freedom Of Speech isnt as general as most people think

Fifth Freedom

The right of Fifth Freedom, gives the person authority to eliminate a person(s) without any Legal or Governmental consequence.

1. Kill anyone without consequence.
2. Eliminate target with no hesitation.
3. To kill someone with disregard to Law or Political hostilities.

"Within the fictional world of Splinter Cell, this unofficial Fifth Freedom allows an operative to disregard any law, agreement, or framework of ethical behavior in order to accomplish his mission. As Dermot P. Brunton put it, "all means are acceptable." For example, the operative may kill in combat or by assassination, may torture or kidnap people, may deploy on U.S. soil, and may spy on other U.S. government agencies. Fifth Freedom is also used as a verb. To "Fifth Freedom" someone is another way of saying to kill someone." - Wikipedia, Fifth Freedom.

NOTE : The Fifth Freedom is unoffical, but many use it in war and in personal situations.

Splinter Cell - In the game Splinter Cell, Sam Fisher an operative of the fictional Third Echelon is commisioned witht he fictional right of Fifth Freedom.

It is also used in Noam Chomsky : The Culture Of Terrorism.

It is also stated in one of Franklin D. Roosevelt's speeches.

Freedom fries

Something that's a lot more likely to kill you than the terrorism that made you hysterical enough to use that name in the first place.

Bob was frantically eating his freedom fries at a McDonald's in Kearney, Nebraska so he can hurry up and leave just in case al-Qaida decides to strike that particular establishment. In the end he was taken out of the restaurant in an ambulance following a near-fatal heart attack, for which he had no medical insurance to cover the costs and couldn't declare bankruptcy because of the new bankruptcy laws passed by the Republican-dominated Congress and approved by President Bush.

He voted Republican in the next election because they told him that despite all his problems, if Democrats win they will (in cooperation with France) pay for the airfare and lodging of all foreign terrorists who want to come to America and carry out attacks, and that not even Kearney, NB would spared their mighty wrath.

freedom of speech

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

In short, we can say what we want to say, within certain limits. Yes, you can say "FUCK YOU" to a police officer and call your lawyer (if you're stupid enough) and get away with it. You can't give threats or endanger public safety, however.

Basically, if you want to use it, keep your lawyer on speed dial and have deep pockets.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. -Part of the U.S Bill of Rights.
