BUTT ROCK

I'd give "butt rock" a different definition. As opposed to late-'80s, early-'90s metal, butt rock is really exemplified by plodding, thudding, vaguely bluesy hard rock from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s.

Nazareth, Foghat and Blackfoot are all perfect examples of Butt Rock.

Pop Rocks

A band that has went from being cool to a teeny bopper band. Hard rock turned to catchy toons that little girls and their moms can sing to together in the car.

dad rock

Music that Boomers would listen to and/or write themselves. Picturing a 35-50 year old dance to these tracks puts your stomach in a knot. Inherently uncool. However, some very good bands today write embarrasing Dad Rock tracks.

They also tend to have long titles.

dish the rock

A common phrase use to make an urgency to leave the scene or situation. Often used in exclamation and with addative such as "hard" or with added exclamation points. Can be shortened to a gerund "dishing."

Jackson: Predator missile coming in. Daniel: Dish the rock!!!

Here comes some seagulls. I am dishing hard.

Un-Rock

Un-Rock is a genre of rock and roll that evolved from psychedelic rock music first played by bands like Pink Floyd. By early 2005, there was enough analog and digital technology so that intricate and complex FX could be layered during live performances and recordings over guitar, live drums, bass guitar, vocals, or any other combination of instruments without the use of pre-recordings or computers. There is a heavy indie rock influence in this type of music. The guitar sound can range from clean to fuzz to heavy distortion. The drums are live and use a deep driving kick. The melodies tend to be simple with few chord changes. It can range from down tempo to punk rock fast. This type of music is considered to be the trip-hop of rock and roll. Sam Oak of Unfamiliar Occurrence helped shape the sound of this genre of music by getting inspired by bands like Wilco, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, and Arcade Fire.

Un-Rock bands include: Unfamiliar Occurrence, Wilco, Arcade Fire, Dove, Deathcab for Cutie...
