A faggot is someone who is gay and can't stop expressing it (wearing pink and hitting on non-gay guys etc). A gay person is normal and acts fine and it's okay if they are camp.
Some people use faggot as a replacement for stupid or idiot, when the person they are calling a faggot may not be homosexual at all.

It's also used to describe a very famine or weak person. Christians are the main ones pushing it, and encourage their teenagers to use it. People that use this word often aren't the brightest people, because they can't think of anything alternative besides Gay, and Fag.
