nme indie

Someone who solely bases their music tastes on whats hot in the nme and calls themselves indie, then typically writes all these bands on their myspace in an attempt to be new and cool rather than backcatoluging through other genres of music.
favourite bands include: klaxons, hadouken!, the young knives, metric, les incompetents, vincent vincent and the villians, and any bands that havent quite reached the mainstream yet, but are publicised in nme. usally dont own any of these bands albums but have downloaded one of the tracks from limewire. generally doesn't buy any clothes unless their from topshop/topman.

person 1: AH raw have you heard the new young knives song!
person 2: Shup you nme indie!

indie kid

time to straighten this whole difference between scenexcore and indie kids.
ok. scenesters usually tend to all follow a strict code of behavior, totally limiting creative license on everything they do. Indie kids, on the other hand, don't always have to take pride in listening to obscure bands, but simply find solace in music that they enjoy.
scenxcore is a lifestyle, which has evolved into a self-superior state of mind that encompasses dressing simply for shock value, taking multiple pictures of oneself, and conforming to "scenexcore" code of law.
Indie kids, on the other hand, are generally, tolerant of other lifestyles, as long as they promote freedom and creative license. Indie kids feel comfortable around others and are not world-hating narcisists.
Thus, we have discovered the difference between scenexcore and indie.

-a conversation between an indie kid and a scene kid-

{scenexcorekid1} dude- last i styled my hair for 3 hours then asked my other friend how scene i looked

{indiekid1} learn some behavioral freedom and stop buying into the social scene!

{scenexcorekid1} i just wanted to look cool *runs away*

Indie Girl

There is no particular style to indie girls. The basic outline of an 'indie girl' is someone that does what they want. They listen to music that you've probably never heard of, wear what they want and are usually in touch with subjects that allow them to express themselves such as textiles, art, media, music and photography.

There is a typical stereotype of an Indie Girl which consists of messy, bleached, short hair. They wear vintage dresses and wear red lipstick. However there is no real 'trend' they are each different and unique.

You can't go shopping to try and change your image to be an Indie Girl, it's about being yourself all the time, but in a kind of rock chick way.

Indie Girl

I agree with Kourtnee D. If you say you are "Indie" then you are obviously not. And that goes for all stereotypes and labels. There is nothing more obnoxious then all these kids sulking around saying "Oh, I’m so Emo" or "Oh, i am such an Indie Girl" Just be who you are and if someone ELSE wants to label you then fine. In my opinion, labeling yourself is just as bad as giving yourself a nickname. That is for others to give to you.

And don't pretend to be into music you don't like and movies you don't understand because you think they are "Indie" and you want to be "Indie" If you like the poppy mainstream crap, that’s fine but don't act like you like independent music and films because you want to seem ethereal and deep.

As far as I’m concerned, having a checklist of HOW TO'S (I.E. How to dress, act, speak, and what music and movies to be into, hell even having to damn label of "Indie") goes against everything that is this so called "Indie" label. I thought it was about being "Independent" of the mainstream routine that people fall into and being "Independent" of labels. It seems as though all the self-proclaimed "Indie Kids" are so into being "Indie" they have lost sight of what it's really being about.

All in all, just be yourself. As corny as that sounds :-)

Girl 1: "I am such an Indie Girl "

Girl 2: "Oh, me too. I am so into all that Indie music and stuff"

Girl 3: "Wrong, You are posers, which is 10 times worse"

indie rock

Genre of music, nicknamed after the independent labels which support lesser-known bands. Typically, the independent labels allow more "musical freedom", which results in a truer, less cookie-cutter sound that mainstream listeners do not immediately identify with. Indie rock draws inspiration from bands such as the Beatles, The Velvet Underground, and Radiohead.

Many indie rock bands are characterized by the use of unique or less-popular instruments. Subjectively (since music is subjective), indie rock cds typically sound less "perfect" than mainstream music, which typically grabs the attention of indie rock enthusiasts.

Indie rock is a mixture of many other genres, including alternative rock, folk music, electronica, even pop. It also tends to be very positive music, despite popular opinion.

More well-known rockers that are excellent introductions: The Killers, Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, Arctic Monkeys, Spoon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Others that are popular among indie rockers: The Flaming Lips, The Shins, Bright Eyes, The Decemberists, Wilco, The Magic Numbers, Mates of State, The Essex Green, Calexico, dios (malos), Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Rilo Kiley, far too many to list. Find a Paste magazine and dig in.

indie kid

Category of person; better than emo.

Usually if an indie kid asks you if you like a band you will have not have heard of the band. Indie kids could usually name five hundred bands you've never heard of without breaking a sweat.

There is an underlying war between the indie kids and the emo's this will be because they one. attempted to steal there dress sense but then turn it all black. two. took converse off them. three. made people which are neither an indie kid or emo think that they are one of the same. the indie kids do not like this as they are obviously far superior with better dress sense, hair styles, lifestyles and obviously music taste than the emos.

indie kids may not like to use the word 'indie' to describe themselves anymore as it has been stolen by corporate sellouts who now claim that bands such as embrace, snow patrol and keane are indie.

if you thought that those bands were indie until you read that sentence you are not indie.

indie kids care about they way they look; they just don't go on about it. in fact they probably spend as much time on there appearance as they do seeking out unknown bands.

they can be found at local gigs that only cost about Β£4 to get into or at the bigger indie gigs which cost at most about Β£9 to get into.

indie are the anti-emo. indie are not close to emo... one major difference is that indie kids have better hair.

indie yuppie: i like indie. i was listening to embrace earlier.
indie kid: that's not indie. that is what the capitalists have wrapped up nicely and put into a carefully manfuactured package with a big stamp on it saying 'indie' which does not make it indie. go listen to bromheads jacket.
indie yuppie: who..?
indie kid: ....don't even talk to me.

Heaps indie

A term used by crazy hipsters (usually musicians) to imply that something is extremely cool. It is in fact exactly one awesomeness level above ΓΌber cool. Most often used to describe succulents and other hardy plants.

"Have you seen Pablo's succulents?"

"Yeah, they're heaps indie!"
