Society is known for it's sense of social rejection of people that use this word, even if it's not being used in a hateful context for very little reason.
From firings, riots, public beatings, public shaming, the n word is so hated despite it not specifically originating from the slave days at all.

A new name for a "gourmet" taco. It has an awkward cell phone built in, plays sub-par games, and costs $300. Meh, they taste pretty bad, and the electronic features make it one weird taco, but hey, tacos are tacos.
"Mmmm.....an N-Gage!"
"You spent $300 on a taco?"
"Yeah, well...I wanted to try it...."
*takes a bite*

CRACK: Crack is actually an impure form of freebase. Procedures for
both substances are based on the fact that while cocaine hydrochloride
is very soluble in water, base cocaine is almost insoluble.
DIRRECTIONS FOR MAKING CRACK: mix 2 parts ok coke HCL for 1 part baking soda in 20 ml of
water. Heat solution gently until white precipitates form, and stop
heating when precipitation stops. Filter and keep precipitate. wash
precipitate once with water (this procedure usually omitted in street
product). Dry 24 hours under heat lamp. Voila. The product is much
less pure (there is lots of baking soda left) but the procedure is
safer.

A really shitty phone/"gaming device" thing made by Nokia in a lame attempt to challenge Nintendo's Game Boy. Not only is 300 bucks, none of its functions are terribly great.

Use of the words: nigger, niggaz, niglet, or any other derivation as intended to seperate those with dark skin and of African descent from all others.
Use of this term by such dark skin individuals toward others of similar heritage is sometimes thought of as acceptable. Doing this however keeps the word in circulation and promotes the use of the N-bomb by people of any race.
Black guy uses the N - bomb in referring to his friends including both black and caucasion people: Hey niggaz--hurry up, we'll miss the show!
Just to recap what his friend said the white guy also drops the N - bomb:
Hurry up niggaz--we're going to be late!
Then the scuffle ensues.
Moral: if you are offended when anyone uses the N-bomb toward you; don't use it toward others.
