Northern Virginia (and the D.C. area) are home to some of the most competitive, elite and exclusive preparatory schools in the country (see: NCS, St Stephens St Agnes, St Albans, Holton, Madeira, Woodberry and Sidwell) Northern Virginia is among one of the richest counties in the country and is one of the areas of the highest expense to live as well.
However, Northern Virginia ranges from poor and full of immigrants (South Arlington... Arlington for the most part) to haunts of the fabulously wealthy (Great Falls, Langley, McLean, Falls Church, Northern Arlington, Alexandria and Middleburg).
Northern Virginia is in no way Southern, though some southern people live there... the rich ones of course. Northern Virginia is, however, slower and friendlier than NYC, making New Yorkers hate NoVAers because they get the best of both worlds.
NoVAers like to complain about how there's nothing to do when the nation's capitol is a 10 minutes drive away. They also are amused about how afraid everyone was of the sniper and when relatives come to visit and are actually interested in D.C. The traffic is awful and the drivers are really uptight and agressive. It takes 15 minutes to drive 7 miles and people honk the horn if you don't peel out the *second* the light turns green.

Majority of these definitions of 'Northern Virginia' were artfully created by uneducated and bitter Southern Virginians. Northern Virginia (Often referred to as 'Nova') is a suburban location that is diverse in many aspects.
Fairfax County is one of the richest counties in the entire country according to the annual income made by families. Majority of those who acquire such a salary made it through college. This is a major turn-off to southerners. God forbid they speak proper English, and learn something other then how to properly lynch a "foreigner." Oh. and southern hospitality my ass, majority of them are rude, and racist. (Not to be stereotypical, but it's true).
The children of NOVA, according to these southerners, are "rich little brats." I'm sorry we have people (parents, guardians) who provide for us, and you're stuck shoveling cow shit for the rest of your life. Northern Virginians live comfortable lives; food in the stomach, house above your head, and a sexy ass car parked in the mansions garage.
Everyone has one life to live, we're just making ours worthwhile (unless you're into reincarnation; that's a completely different story).The material world can be a big part of our lives, but we still have morals, and we still have respect for others. Northern Virginians are accepting and welcoming people.
This is the land of opportunities, and while southerners are giving cows hand jobs, we're living the good life.

State that joined the Union in 1863 when the western counties of VA seceded from the aforementioned slave state. The Union Army womped Confederate ass to show that Abe and his boys were in command and not much has happened there since. It is the only state with two panhandles as well. I also really thinkt he other definition (sheep) really brings up a point many cannot ignore, however....

similar to hell. it would be wise for you to never come here. there is no good entertainment whatsoever. unless you consider entertainment to be watching a NASCAR race on a sunday afternoon after coming home from church somewhere down the holler. no musical entertainers ever come here besides reneck country people such as... brad paisley, george strait, alan jackson, martina mcbride, the charlie daniels band, and the like. west virginia is a common place to find whole junkyards in a single person's front yard. west virginia is ranked number one in obeseity, pretty much the only thing we are ranked in. home to the west virginia mountaineers, an extremely good football team. also home to marshall university, a fact i am embarrassed to admit.
