tolerance

1. Your ability to stand something. The more you consume drugs or medicine, the higher your tolerance becomes, and the more you need to consume to feel the same effect.

2. A self-destructive concept that cannot work on a global scale. Tolerance as a concept was created during the Age of Enlightenment, thanks to multiple factors in Europe, namely secularization, Christianity (admittedly the church didn't help willingly, but the fundamental ideology helped) and the many quarrels of intellectuals at the time. Unfortunately, these factors did not touch the rest of the world in equal scale, which means tolerance is not equally valued everywhere else. By tolerating the intolerant, tolerance is destroyed, hence becoming self-destructive.

3. How easily you stand other people. Tolerance itself here might not be as much a trait as it is reliant on the other person's personality (or lack thereof).

Person A: My religion states that women and infidels have no rights. Tolerance is not a value we are concerned with.
Person B: Tolerance is a value to us, so I tolerate your intolerance. Maybe forcing you to be tolerant is intolerant of us?
Person C: Don't be retarded.

tolerance break

A phrase used mainly by weed smokers. It refers to taking a break from smoking, or smoking less often, in an attempt to lower your tolerance to THC, and thus gain a better high each time you do smoke.

zero tolerance

A "get tough" policy of making no exceptions in regards to a particular (usually criminal or undesirable) matter, born as a response to a general sense of uneaven application of rules and punishments.

To react to a proscribed activity or substance with absolute prejudice... Without regard to mitigating circumstances or conditions.

I don't care if you've got glaucoma, we have a zero tolerance policy to drugs, including marijuana.

We will react to sexism and racism with zero tolerance.

zero tolerance

A policy that was put into use by United States schools and other establishments soon after the Columbine tragedy.
In practice, zero tolerance policies allow for no weapons or dangerous objects in school.
However, the noun "weapon" can mean "an object that can be used to cause harm"; the phrase "dangerous objects" is a plural of the same meaning; therefore, almost any object can be considered a weapon.
Because of this, overzealous officials often unleash horrificaly exaggerated sentences for the silliest of things.

A 7-year-old boy was suspended for pretending to shoot his classmates.
