A common term used in the freak out and xbox 360 community, general hardware failure (much more commonly known as the infamous red ring of death) is when an xbox 360 shows 3 quarters of the circle red. If this happens, the xbox 360 is basically toasted.
Not to be confused with the friendlier hardware failure, who only makes 1 quarter red and doesn't toast your xbox 360.
Name is based of the infamous BSoD (blue screen of death), who can be fixed much easier than the red ring of death.

Commonly referred to as RRoD, the Red Ring of Death is a error present on the {Xbox 360 console. The green lights on the console suddenly become a eerie shade of red signifying that something is wrong with the console.
One ring signifies a hardware failure. A error screen with an EXX code is usually present on the screen, with E74 being the most common error code on the Xbox 360, signifying that the console needs repair.
Two rings signify a overheating problem. If the console is hotter than usual or is left on for too long, the console can overheat and sometimes damage the internals. To prevent this, if overheating is detected, the TV screen shows a No Signal message and two red rings appear on the console. It could signify it was left on for too long, or there is a serious error with the fans inside the console.
Three rings signify a generic hardware failure, and is the most common one. Three red rings appearing on the console means that the generic internals of the system (fans, etc.) have suffered serious damage and the console is most likely wrecked. The console, if broken inside its warranty period, can be fixed for free.
Four rings signify a AV cable error, and causes all 4 rings to go red. This happens whenever the AV cable isn't detected, or there is something wrong with it. 4 red rings usually mean the console's AV cable has been unplugged, and can easily be fixed by plugging the AV cable back in to the console.
My Xbox is wrecked. All I get is the Red Ring of Death. Can't believe I wasted $300 for a defective piece of junk.
The worst nightmare you would ever have back in the day on the original XBOX 360 in it's launch. Trust me, it's fucking painful if you ask me, it happened to me one time I got the old 360 few days after Christmas. This was due to the rushed launch of the 360, or just buying a used one that may have already gotten the dreaded red ring.
This was (thankfully) solved with Microsoft holding a 3 Year warranty for repairs on the console. Well now we are in 2017, if you have this problem now and you had it for about what, 10 years? You are screwed. Or you can just buy a slim 360 which won't break down on you. So I guess you are not boned after all.
"Fuck, my game froze." *notices Red Ring Of Death* "FUCK!!!"
