Most southern part of New York State.
An island demographically cut in half. The North shore made up of Black, Latin, and Irish familes of poorer stature who work labor or civil jobs and home of all the boroughs project developments, then the south shore predominatly Italian and some Russian families, mainly business owners with lots of wealth and big houses. I just love the kids with their chirp phones and cars with spinners that daddy baught em who try so hard to act like they're black but at the same time are the most racist people in New York. If your coming to Staten Island, live up North with me..lot better up here.

A borough of New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island). People are obviously Exaggerating aspects of Staten Island. Yes there are rich kids, fake tans, and spikey hair but does every last person have that? NO. Yes people have an acccent, so do people from South Carolina, or Mexico, accents reflect where your from, so they're kind of good, otherwise we'd all talk the same monotone voice.

The largest freshwater(Lake Huron) island in the world, with the largest freshwater inland lake on an island,(Manitou Lake) in the world. This Island in Northern Ontario has beautiful scenery and beautiful people. The People there live on their own relaxed time. Life moves slower with twists of technology throughout. The Island is a beautiful place to vacation and an amazing place to live. There are several small towns on the island. You may take the swing bridge in Little Current, which swings in the seasonal summer months, on the hour every hour(during daylight) or you can take a boat or the vehicle/passenger ferry, The MS Chi Cheemaun, which will take you from South Baymouth on the south east end of the island to Tobermory on the Bruce Penninsula.
People from around the world vacation here, and enjoy the gorgeous scenery and the eccletic lifestyles that are lived and enjoyed by the Islanders.
Manitoulin Island is thought by many to be the Eighth World Wonder of the World.
If you are born and raised Manitoulin Style, you are known as a Haweater.
People are known to throw their watches over the swing bridge as they cross, claiming Island Time.
Fishing and hunting are second to none.
The only traffic lights to deal with are to get on the island or to leave it.

I can't believe all of the things people have written here. Long Island can't be upstate solely based on that fact that is the southern-most part of New York. With that said, Most areas such as Nassau County and Western Suffolk County are not rural. Rural areas are hours from any type of city, having farms and acres of unused land. None of that is in any of these areas. I think that you people are just being defensive about where you are from. Nassau County is not an hour from the city. With traffic permitting, it is slightly over a 1/2 hour from the eastern part. I wont compare LI to Manhatten because Manhatten is Urban, but areas in queens are just as nice, and much nicer than areas on Long Island. We do have nice areas, but we also have bad areas as well. Areas like Hempstead are just the same as some parts of Queens, accept it.
stop being ignorant and labeling people from Long Island as "hicks," especially being that there are places in Nassau County that are under a mile outside of Queens.

Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot located near Beaufort, South Carolina. It trains all males that live East of the Mississippi river all all female recruits.
