Five pin DIN

Describes a type of plug most-typically used to connect MIDI interfaces. The DIN stands for 'Deutsches Institut für Normung' (German Industry for Standards).

The plug has a round metal shield with a notch inside the bottom (to assist proper alignment) along with an array of five equally spaced pins in an arc towards the top (all inside the round shield ring).

The standard five pin DIN MIDI cable has served many a musician connecting simple MIDI controllers to entire racks of gear. They are inexpensive, reliable (most anyway), and easily obtainable.

pinning their ears back

To have one’s ears pinned back means to be severely scolded or to be bested in an athletic contest, soundly. The idiom have one’s ears pinned back is an American phrase that came into use in the mid-1800s. Its origin is uncertain. Some say it is derived from the sport of wrestling and some say it is somehow linked to the emotional state of an animal with its ears pinned back, though both of these explanations seem rather dubious. It may be more likely that the phrase have one’s ears pinned back is related to some sort of physical punishment that has gone out of common use. Related terms are has one’s ears pinned back, had one’s ears pinned back and having one’s ears pinned back.

72-pin connector

The main point of failure on the original version of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES-001). The pins wear out and bend over time because of bad design and will almost certainly need replaced on any NES-001 console. A worn 72-pin connector will often result in major glitches, failure to read game cartridges, and indirectly, the flashing red light issue.

I can't get Super Mario Bros. 3 to load! Must be the 72-pin connector.
