Term was first coined to describe the "D-Day" invasion of World War 2. When Allied ships inflitrated Nazi shores, and infantry troops literally had to "hit the ground running", to keep from getting shot.

This comes from highschool football(American) when the extra point is about to be kicked. Some highschools use a tee to hold the ball after it's snapped, although most do not. If a kicker doesn't want the tee, he asks his coach to remove it and kick it as it was meant, off the ground.
Coach: Go ahead and kick it.
Kicker: What's the holder putting on the ground?
Coach: The tee you're going to kick off of.
Kicker: Really?
Coach: Fine, kick it off the ground.

When your friend holds onto the Rook in the game of Rook, a natural reaction would be to say, "WOAH! You're flirting with dangerous ground here missy!"

A pretty good half life mod IF in the next patch they fix melee system, new player skins, and much slower re-load times.
Why does it take a few seconds to re-load my longrifle!!! It takes me 1 minute to do it in real life.
