the mistaken belief that crimes committed against special interest groups (e.g. homosexuals, ethnic minorities etc) are somehow worse than the same crimes committed against anybody else, and therefore should be punished more severely. Another example of the insanity of political correctness.

This sort of relationship usually occurs when you have complicated relations of someone of the opposite sex. You'd want to kill them, but you'd be the first to mourn their death. You would like to castrate them, but then you couldn't bear their children.

Ostensible meaning: "Don't criticize me unfairly, with hatred in your heart."
Actual meaning: "I may have committed a bad act (though obviously I'm not going to admit that in so many words) but you are far worse. At least I don't have hatred in my heart. You are a bad person."
Or: "I reject your right to criticize me at all, even when I am obviously in the wrong, and I show my contempt for the very idea by refusing even to engage with your justified criticism, implying that it is motivated by jealousy and vindictiveness."

Hate crime laws vary from state to state.
