Forest Metal

Forest metal is heavy metal music, generally of the black metal subgenre that mainly deals with the subject matter of nature and wildlife. It also promotes going back into ancient ways instead of going along with the evolution of industrial and urban living. Most prominent among the forest metal scene would probably be the Norwegian second-wave black metal band Ulver (meaning 'wolves'), who used forest imagery and themes extensively. They dedicated an entire album, entitled Nattens Madrigal, to werewolves.

The band Finntroll is arguably the band that uses the most forest related imagery and lyrics. On their ep, Visor om Slutet, the band included several long samples of sounds heard in the forest, such as frogs croaking, birds singing and things more related to Troll Metal, like trolls eating food.

It should be noted that forest metal is not exclusively produced in Scandinavia, as evidenced by the Czech Republic group Trollech and American group Asatru.

Dude, have you heard that Finntroll ep? Pure forest metal. I felt like I was returning to nature in Scandinavian old growth while listening.

Doom Metal

A subgenre of heavy metal, which is generally described as very slow and very heavy; it is really a progression and exaggeration of stoner rock. Although very (sometimes mind numbingly) slow, doom metal can be more upbeat. No matter what kind of doom, the genre owes a lot to Black Sabbath, whose early records were very doom.

Doom can also be mixed with other types of music - some bands add a gothic flavour, some a more stoner rock groove, some, such as Forest of Shadows, mix it with black metal.

Traditional doom - Black Sabbath, Candlemass.

More upbeat doom - Cathedral, Solitude Aeturnus.

metal-archives

metal-archives (also known as Encyclopaedia Metallum: Metal Archives) is a user-edited website, established in 2002, which purports to be a heavy metal-focused database. Although the site has garnered a reputation over the years for being "elitist" and "strict" on what can/cannot be included, many bands listed there are actually folk, ambient, industrial, gothic rock and other "headbang worthy" music their site "rules" forbade, otherwise. When you couple this with the secretive personalities of those who moderate/administer everything over there, Metal Archives has the same credibility (and "metal-bility") as Milli Vanilli by the end of the day.

METALHEAD: Metal forums should not be run like a fascist regime! And some metalcore/nu-metal shit is making it beyond the radar here? Fuck it, I'm finding another site to frequent that is actually METAL, not "metal-archives".

HERR WITCHER: I dub thee Dursted, then!

METALHEAD: What the hell is that supposed to mean?

HERR WITCHER: When we ban people from our specialz metal site, it is called dursting, like Fred Durst.

METALHEAD: For a metal site, you have an awfully strange fixation with Fred Durst!

Gothic metal

Gothic metal is a type of metal which is fairly heavy, with heavy guitars, but what attributes most to gothic metal is the unique vocals, which make it gothic. If it's a male vocalist, the vocals will be low and deep, and in some gothic metal bands, there is no screaming/growling. If it's a female vocalist, then she just sings in her normal singing voice (no screaming, no POP voice - whining, moaning).

John said, "Hey what's that type of metal called when the dude sings really low, is it black metal or something?" . Micheal said, "No dude, it's gothic metal".

True Metal

Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Manowar. Metal that holds true to the intents of the Metal Gods, music that Ormagoden would enjoy. Music that takes true talent to make and time to write, not whiny-ass emo bullshit like A Day to Remember or Bullet For My Valentine. Music that makes the eardrums of the unrighteous bleed and the faces of the weak melt. It is about individuality, freedom, and sheer bone-crushing power. True Metal is music in it's greatest form, human creativity taken to its peak. True Metal is loud, strong, and beautiful. In many cases, it is characterized by an endless battle between the voice of the singer and the screams of lead guitar. It stands opposed by false metal, weak music more concerned with record sales than musicianship, and popular music, at the current time rap and wimpy ass pop music. The battle rages, but as always, metal will prevail. Metal defeated disco, glam, punk, and it will triumph again.

John: My favorite bands are Korn and Avenged Sevenfold.
Thor: WHAT?! Those aren't true metal! Listen to some Dio!
John: Dio sucks.
Thor: *smites John with his mighty hammer*
