Ad-dentity theft

Occurs when a company releases an advertising campaign which is hi-jacked by others purporting to be the company in press releases that instead point out company shortcomings.

Chevron released the "We Agree" ad campaign on October 18, 2010. A group of under the radar marketers, the Yes Men, released a press release highlighting the company's alleged shortcomings related to environmental issues, pretending that is was an official press release from Chevron. As the press began reporting on the fraudulent press releases, the Yes Men issued another press release supposedly again from Chevron, that reported that the ad campaign and related press releases had been hi-jacked. The term ad-dentity theft was created to describe the the identity of the ad being stolen.

Argumentum Ad Numerum

(If many believe so, it is so)

Argumentum Ad Numerum: the idea where something is true, because great numbers believe it. As in eat shit, twenty trillion flies cant be wrong! - Bill Maher

Adding pennies to the pile

Adding or contributing a small (usually unnecessary) bit extra.

When John decided to help out the cleaning by taking away his rubbish from lunch, he was just adding pennies to the pile.

pop-up ad

A window that pops up on the screen suddenly, often without warning, advertising something. Nobody ever actually buys what the pop-up is advertising. They're just annoying pieces of crap. Some people create ones that install malware or other unwanted files onto a user's computer.

In other words, an embodiment of Satan.

I clicked the download button for a file on Megaupload and a pop-up ad came up advertising a free iPad. I knew it had to be a scam, so I tried to close it, but it wouldn't close. So I had to close Firefox in Task Manager, but that closed ALL running Firefox processes, not just the pop-up ad. Freakin' annoying.

Reductio Ad Absurdum

Reductio Ad Absurdum (Latin for "reduction to absurdity") is a logical argument that refutes a statement by proving that the premise would lead to a logically absurd and ridiculous conclusion.

Another great phrase to use against flat-earthers and other conspiracy nutjobs alike.

Flat-earther: THE EARTH IS FLAT!!!!

Me, an intellectual: Oh yeah, then explain how nobody has ever fallen off the edge of the earth. Reductio Ad Absurdum.
