rolling a one

Failing at a task or fumbling a job/task/situation; usually something simple. Based on the twenty-sided dice system used in games such as D&D, in which rolling a one usually constitutes an automatic failure (called a "fumble").

When he was unable to repeat what his Professor had lectured at him, James made a claimed of rolling a one on his "Listen Check".

One-upper

A one-upper who always has to be bigger or better than you. If your uncle has 20 ft. boat, his uncle or cousin has 21 ft. boat. A one-upper never loses in the world of story-telling.

Chris is a nice guy, but he's a big one-upper. He always follows my stories with a better one!

one-lowmanship

The reverse of one-upmanship, one-lowmanship is practice of successively outdoing a competitor by spending less, having less, or doing less. Originated on Offbeat Bride to describe the indie-er than thou, DIY-er than thou, lower-budget than thou attitude that nontraditional brides can sometimes slip into.

Then she said, "You call THAT a low budget wedding? My wedding budget was $15, and we managed to feed 115 guests." It was totally one-lowmanship.
