In this day and age, "emo" is now the definition for numerous things such as the way someone dresses; certain genres of music; the way people act; a mood and also someone who feels the need to self harm.
Emo originally derrived from the sub-genre of punk known as hardcore punk in the late 80s and lived on from there.
"Emo" music as it is commonly called, is typically music filled with long high pitched screams, continous off beats, a guitar riff that is usually on 3 string and at one side of guitar. And all of this for the Teenagers who want to be someone they are not and want attention from their peers as they believe their life is far harder than anyone elses and that no one understands them or how hard their life is.
Emo is someone who is too skinny, poses and listens to other peoples music about how "bad" their lives are.
A person who is mentally unstable and broken. Sometimes has the haircut too. Wears mostly black/red/pink.

I'm getting a little tired of all those old ass definitions talking about shitty music genres and scarves because in 2014 "emo music" has nothing to do with fucking acoustic guitars. And I'm sure in a little while my definiton will be outdated too. So for 2014 here is the definition.
1) emo is short for emotional
2) the new music genre is called screamo and has a lot of electric guitar and is closely related to metal. So please shut the fuck up about whining and acoustic guitars ;)
2) most people who are emo are depressed due to a chemical imbalance in their brains. Depression is not a choice. Some take meds to balance these chemicals.
3) not all emos self harm or have an e.d. The emos that do self harm do it to ease pain. It's like being an alchoholic. It's an addiction. E.d.s are mental disorders having to do with being skinny.
4)for the last fucking time people EMO IS NOT A LOOK. Can you seriously look emotional by the type of shirt you wear (the answer is no). Somebody could listen to screamo or self harm or be depressed and shop at American eagle.
5) 80% of emos aren't doing this for fucking attention. As I said earlier if they dress normal, smile, and hide their scars how the fuck would that be asking for attention. And the other 20% that are waiting for some hot guy to kiss your scars and sweep you off your feet and to bask in the attention of others... STOP. you're giving everyone else a bad rep. It's not cute.
5) goth is not emo.

Bestfriend #1: *attends the funeral of their long-time best friend. Sees their parents and everyone crying. Knows instead of hiding they could have saved them*
