anti-villain

The converse of an anti-hero (i.e., a protagonist who isn't purely good or heroic), an anti-villain is an antagonist who isn't purely evil nor entirely unsympathetic -- a character who doesn't seem to deserve being cast as the villain, perhaps cast arbitrarily as the villain because they are not the focus of the story but merely present a foil to the central figure, who may be an antihero protagonist. Cf. scapegoat.

Magneto was an anti-villain because, while the X-Men were the protagonists who fought to defeat him and prevailed in the end, we can still respect and appreciate him for his motives and principles, however ill-considered his ruthless methods.

VILLAIN ARC

When facing a difficult situation in life, both guys and girls sometimes turn to the gym as a way to bounce back. This phase, often referred to as the "villain arc," involves focusing on self-improvement through fitness.

Todd: "I can't believe she betrayed me like that. It really hurts."

Jeff: "Yeah, breakups can be rough. Take your time to heal."

Todd: "Heal? No chance! I'm hitting the gym hard, working on myself. I'll prove I'm better off without her!"

Jeff: "LETS GO A VILLAIN ARC!!!"

City of Villains

The Villainous compliment to City of Heroes, also a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG), where players create villainous characters and spread crime as they see fit. Characters are divided by origin and archetype.

Origins: Magic, Mutant, Natural, Science, Technology

Archetypes: Corruptor, Dominator, Brute, Stalker, Mastermind

Corruptor: Primarily ranged offense with secondary defense, buff and/or healing

Dominator: Primarily control powers with secondary offensive powers

Mastermind: Primarily summons henchmen, secondary defense, buff and/or healing

Stalker: Primarily melee combat with secondary personal defensive powers, has stealth ability

Brute: Primarily melee combat with secondary personal defensive powers, more hitpoints than a stalker but cannot stealth

City of Villains also expanded the PvP (Player vs Player) aspect of City of Heroes, which started with no PvP. "The Arenas" were introduced to test PvP, and City of Villains was the actual implication of PvP. PvP is not required, however, and in either game one can stay in their own "hero" or "villain" zones and not encounter other fightable players.

Abbreviated CoV.

"I play a Mastermind in City of Villains."
