drone metal

The incorrect term for the under-appreciated genre known as Drone Doom. Quite probably some of the most atmospheric music in metal today, it features minimalistic riffs and sounds to paint a picture in your mind. The lyrics deal with abstract concepts, but usually are melancholic as a whole.

The correct term for drone metal is "drone doom," as our "Deathfuckingmetal" dumbass doesn't seem to know.

Download any Sunn O))) song, it'll make your skin crawl. In the best way possible.

symphonic metal

A great genre of music thats so much better than that poor shitty gcyb genre. Symphonic metal is metal with orchestral backgrounds. Symphonic metal bands include Rhapsody and Lucca Turili.

I was listening to a stupid Slipknot song and than my friend showed me a symphonic metal song by Rhapsody and i was like, "Dang schmurrt, me no listen to shitty gcyb no more."

Death Metal

Death metal is one of the extreme genres of heavy metal, along with black metal, thrash metal and... well, they're the only other ones worth noting. Death metal has roots in 80's thrash metal, usually in bands like Slayer and Venom, however, many bands also have roots in Grindcore, such as Carcass, Napalm death and Bolt Thrower. The genre is thankfully under-aprecciated, owing to it's fast, distorted guitars, rapid druming and blast beats, and low, "growling" vocals. It is actually good that the sub-genre is unknown, because many bands in metal have history of selling out after they "make it". Metallica for example, have a huge history of pissing on their thrash fans with every new album since the black album. Carcass is probably the best example of a death metal band, as it covers genres associated with death metal: death metal, grindcore (or goregrind) and melodic death metal. Carcass also tends to be the best death metal band in existence. A recent trend in Scandanavia seems to involve crossing genres, Children of Bodom, for example, are said to be a mixture of melodic death metal, melodic black metal and power metal. Despite it's dismissal by the mainstream music industry, death metal has many talented musicians, the "death growl" for example is extremely difficult to master, guitars can be incredibly complex, especially in melodic and even more-so, technical death metal, drums are fast and the best drummers incorporate difficult and complex techniques. If power metal is for fantasy nerds, death metal is for people who drink whiskey and shit dynamite, not unlike thrash metal and black metal.

Black Metal

A sub-genre of Metal. And derived from Speed and Thrash Metal. The term 'Black Metal' was coined by the Speed Metal band, Venom.

It is inspired by bands such as Venom and Mercyful Fate. And the first Black Metal band is debated to be either Bathory or Celtic Frost. Although these were unrefined and were not the original true Black Metal bands. The first real Black Metal was started in Norway by bands such as Mayhem, Emperor, Darkthrone, and Satyricon. Later many other sub-genres of Black Metal were created.

Black Metal is usually definied by Vocals that are high in tone and pitch and are usually refered to as the 'Black Metal Screech', very different from the Guttural sound of the 'Death Metal Growl'. Lyrics mostly have Anti-Christian, Misantropic, Satanic, Luciferian, and Pagan basis. Drum beats described as 'blast beats'. But are different from Death Metal blast beats because there is more focus on the Snare drum instead of the Toms. The guitars are usually very repeatative and the riffs are usually only four to five chords. The basslines are similar to the guitar riffs but usually have a more punk quality to them. And the quality of the recordings is usually very bad.

Black Metal was started in defiance of the Death Metal scene, instead of having great, clean production, Black Metal had low and piercing quality. Instead of having complicated riffs and beats, BM had a more simplistic approach. And BM strived to be more controversial in lyrical themes.

There are several sub-genres to the Black Metal genre. And are as follows:

Black Metal: The originators usually coming from Norway.

Melodic Black Metal: Black Metal with the use of keyboards, synths, and more Melodic guitar riffs. Also Clean vocals have become a big part of the genre. Lyrics are usually more Anti-Christian, and Misantrophy based.

National Socialist Black Metal: The difference is only in lyrical themes, which usually deal with NS ideals, racism, paganism, pride of heritage or nation, and hate.

Viking Black Metal: Deals with viking, barbarian, and Norsk tales and religion. Also, Nature is a very reoccuring lyrical theme.

Folk: The Melodic version of the Viking sub-genre, usually using Keyboards or Organs. The lyrical themes usually have basis around folklore and fairy tales.

Symphonic: BM that has symphony elements added to it. Theme albums usually play a big part in this genre.

Avant-Garde: With a focus on instrumentals and the use of various other instruments, mainly keyboards, this genre defines bands that go in an experimental and artistic direction.

Black Death: A sub-genre of Black Metal that has various Death Metal influences and stylings to it. Usually of which is a combination of Death Metal music and specifically drumming, while maintaining Black Metal vocals and lyrical themes.

Black Metal: Mayhem, Darkthrone, and Immortal

Melodic Black Metal: Old Man's Child, Dimmu Borgir, and Naglfar

NSBM: Waffen SS, Sunwheel, and Drudkh

Viking: Enslaved, Graveland, and (New)Bathory

Folk: Finntroll, Vintersorg, and Borknagar

Symphonic: (New)Emperor, (New)Dimmu Borgir, Nokturnal Mortem

Avant-Garde: Celtic Frost, Burzum

Black Death: Behemoth, Zyklon, and Belphegor

metal rap

a combination/crossover between both metal and rap. most of the time this means that the same riff will repeat constantly in the song without much variation. its composition is made up of rap lyrics over the metal instrumental.

person 1: did you hear "one minute" by X?
person 2: yea! I kinda felt like it was metal rap

Fake metal

A label commonly given by elitists to bands that define themselves as a metal subgenre they believe is the catalyst of the downfall of heavy metal.
Elitists, or bullies who diss a band they don't like by using the term, can label metalcore (ex: Attack Attack!, Bring Me the Horizon), glam metal (Kiss, Mötley Crüe), nu metal (Korn, the early works of Deftones), alternative metal (the current works of Deftones, Egypt Central), and some hard rock bands—even though they tend to get mislabeled as that—as fake metal.
It's gotten to a point where people have even tried to say that the only true genre is the one that came from psychedelic, acid, and blues rock, common example for that being Black Sabbath, who also paved the way for doom metal by merging metal with classical and more blues (props to them), and that all these subgenres (thrash for example) are just profit-driven fucks. I think.

Regardless, it's a commonly used term, and there may be a holy war ongoing.

I'm trying to be as neutral as I can for defining this label, so I do apologize if any bias appears.

Elitist: Nu metal is not real metal, you've been brainwashed by the fucking fake metal! Go listen to Carcass, Death, or even Nile!
"Fake" Metalhead: All that stuff is way too amazingly talented for me. I think I'm gonna go listen to Slipknot now.
Me: Who the hell are these people?!
My friend: Welcome to today's society…also known as the fifth circle of Hell.
Me: I'm just gonna…walk away…and listen to whatever the hell I have in my library…

So I did. And the elitist and the metalhead continued arguing. Christ.

metal elitist

a metal elitist is a person, typically an older metalhead guy or an incel teenage boy, who only listens to metal, likes to gatekeep metal, and will call you a poser if you like nu metal or popular metal bands. they are usually misogynistic and will call anything that doesnt fall under an extreme metal genre mid.

Me: “I like the bands Korn and Slipknot. I am also a fan of Metallica.”

Metal Elitist: “Theres no way you like that mallcore bullshit! All they do is sing about angst and dress like rappers! How could you possibly want to listen to a song where a man expresses his emotions? Poser!” *recommends you a black metal band that makes songs about killing minorities*
