When the belts are laid out before loading, they measure nine yards in length. If a pilot were to empty his plane's guns into a target, he'd be giving it the "whole nine yards."

Musical sounds that create a gritty, sinister, depressing, and raucous din that would at first hearing seem to be an inmate's failed attempt at harmony while wasting his hour in the jail yard beating random things against each other quite forcefully and with little grace.
